Job summary

A new vacancy has arisen for a Nursing Associate within Brannam Medical Centre. The Practice is looking for an enthusiastic, experienced Nursing Associate to join our nursing team, in caring for our list of over 19,200 patients in the Barnstaple area.

The successful applicant will be providing clinical services to support the Nursing Team ensuring the delivery of safe, effective, and efficient care within their scope of practice, maximising outcomes for patients. The Nursing Associate will assist clinical staff in the provision of treatment, preventative care, health promotion and patient education.

The role will also include training and development of junior staff and other students attached to the practice.

Main duties of the job

Carry out routine treatment room duties as delegatedby a senior colleague.

Administer routine immunsation following a PatientSpecific Direction.

Administer regular medication via intra-muscular orsub-cutaneous injection.

Carry out annual reviews delegated by a senior colleague.

Assist in and perform routine tasks related topatient care, such as cryotherapy treatments, as directed by senior nursing staff and GPs.

Job responsibilities

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES

The following are the core responsibilities of theNursing Associate. There may be, on occasion, a requirement to carry out othertasks; this will be dependent upon factors such as workload and staffinglevels. The Nursing Associate will work within their scope of clinical practice and:

Carry out routine treatment room duties as delegatedby a senior colleague.

Administer routine immunsation following a PatientSpecific Direction.

Administer regular medication via intra-muscular orsub-cutaneous injection.

Carry out annual reviews delegated by a senior colleague.

Assist in and perform routine tasks related topatient care as directed by senior nursing staff and GPs.

Undertake cryotherapy treatments as instructed by GP.

Follow agreed clinical protocols and PSDs withreferral to senior nurses or GPs as appropriate assess, plan, develop,implement and evaluate programmes to promote health and well- being, andprevent adverse effects on health and well-being.

Signpost to social prescribers, wellbeing team andother health promotion teams as appropriate.

Deliver opportunistic health promotion usingopportunities such as new-patient medicals.

Demonstrate a good understanding of the MentalCapacity Act/Mental Health Act/Deprivation of Liberties and apply principles toeveryday practice. Seeking guidance from a senior colleague as required.

Recognise symptoms for general psychiatricdisorders.

Utilise communication skills for challengingbehaviour.

Dementia awareness, promote staff awareness, patientinformation and local services

Demonstrate engagement with carers.

Document consultations according to NMC guidelines.

Demonstrate good understanding of the principles ofconsent and ensure valid consent is obtained prior to undertaking any nursingcare and procedures.

Ensure awareness of statutory and local clinicaladult and children safeguarding protection procedures, including systems ofreferral. Ability to recognise signs and symptoms of child abuse.

Ensure all mandatory training is completed on anannual basis including; safeguarding, confidentiality, equality and diversity etc.

Able to recognise and manage anaphylaxis accordingto current UK guidelines.

Able to perform cardio-pulmonary resuscitationaccording to current UK guidelines.

Ability to obtain and document informed consent(either verbal or written).

Ensure infection control guidelines are maintained.

Chaperoning and assisting patientswhere appropriate who are being examined by another clinician..

Requesting pathology tests, for example urineculture, swabs.

Confidentially of information gained at work must bepreserved at all times.

Assist in practice audits, CQC compliance evidenceand QOF recalls.

Take lead on local incentive projects relevant to role. Responsibility for achievingtargets

Additional tasks following training and support willinclude:

Cervical Cytology.

Childhood Immunisations & Vaccinations.

Family Planning - Support and advise womenrequesting information relating to family planning needs and contraception

Providing assessment, screening and treatment servicesand health education advice:

Provide nursing treatments to patients inparticipation with general practitioners or Senior Nurse to agreed protocols.

Provide general and specific health screenings tothe practice patients (within agreed protocols) with referral to generalpractitioners as necessary.

Advise patients on general health care with referralto GPs as necessary.

Suppliesand equipment Treatment room and other areas:

Ability to monitor and manage maintenance of stockand equipment to include refrigeration and emergency equipment.

Pathologicalspecimens and investigatory procedures:

Following appropriate training, undertake thecollection, storage and despatch of pathological specimens includingintravenous blood samples, swabs, smears etc and ensure the cleanliness of anyequipment so used. Perform any investigatory procedures requested by the GPs.

Administrativeand professional responsibilities:

Recognise and work within own competence andprofessional code of conduct as regulated by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).

Participate in the administrative and professionalresponsibilities of the practice team.

Ensure accurate notes of all consultations andtreatments are recorded in the patients notes on the clinical computer systemas appropriate.

Ensure accurate completion of all necessarydocumentation associated with patient health care and registration with the practice.

Ensure collection and maintenance of statisticalinformation required for regular and ad hoc reports.

Attend and participate in practice meetings as required.

Assist in the formulation of practice philosophy,strategy and policy and develop appropriate protocols.

Managerial:

Contribute to the assessment of service needs.

Assist patients to identify their health needs.

Contribute a nursing perspective to the practicedevelopment plan.

Manage and organise individual patient consultations. Aware of identificationand reporting procedures related to professional standards.

To attend staff meetings.

Ensure effective relationships and communicationswith the PHCT and other agencies.

Support the practice clinical governance agenda.

Identify changes to clinical practice that arerequired to implement evidence-based guidelines.

Lead the HCA team, reporting to senior manager.

Act as a role model for others with probity andpersonal integrity in all aspects of practice.

Research projects:

Co-operate and participate as required in anyresearch projects within the practice as identified.

Student/staff education and training:

Participate in the education and training ofstudents of all disciplines and the induction of all members of practice staffwith special responsibility for Health CareAssistants.

Liaison:

Maintain effective liaison with other agencies andstaff concerned with patient care and with all other disciplines within thepractice, with appropriate regard to confidentiality.

Professional development:

Maintain continued education by attendance atcourses and study days as deemed useful or necessary for professional development.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

The Nursing Associate must meet the specific qualification and training requirements as specified in the Nursing Midwifery Standards of proficiency by having undertaken and completed the two-year Foundation Degree delivered by a Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) - approved provider and is registered with the NMC and revalidation is undertaken in line with NMC requirements. Candidates must have a GCSE Grade C or equivalent in both English and Maths
