Job summary

We would welcome an enthusiastic, highly motivated nurse to join our busy team in the Oncology & Haematology Emergency Assessment Bay (EAB) here at Northampton General Hospital.

The successful candidate will work as part of the multidisciplinary team providing high quality clinical care to cancer patients as well as supporting junior colleagues to learn and develop their skills .The post holder will collaborate with the department Sister by maintaining smooth daily operations and workflow on EAB and Talbot Butler ward.

EAB is a busy department within the Oncology & Haematology directorate which operates 24/7. Patients on active SACT treatment can call for advise and support. Patients are then either advised how to manage at home, or advised to attend EAB for treatment.

If the post holder does not hold the relevant training or competencies in administration of SACT and triaging, training will be provided by our SACT Lead nurse via a 6 week, in house module.

Applications are welcome from highly motivated nurses who have either recent experience in caring for patients receiving oncological / haematological treatment or a willingness to learn and are committed to delivering a high level of patient centred care and willing to embrace our trust values.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will deliver high standards of care to patients and their families, ensuring excellent patient experience. In particular, take responsibility for assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating programmes of evidenced-based nursing care to a group of patients. The post holder will participate in the daily running of the department when required, ensuring smooth and efficient running and in the absence of the Sister/ Charge Nurse take charge on shift. They will take responsibility for their own self-development helping to provide a suitable learning environment and high standards of clinical practice. They will also be required to recognise their own limitations and seek advice and support from senior staff when required.

Job responsibilities

Take responsibility for the management and organisation of the clinical area when on duty. To have undertaken or have a willingness to undertake the SACT (systemic anti-cancer therapy) course to facilitate administration of SACT within the department. To have undertaken or have a willingness to undertake further training such as triage and pre-chemotherapy assessment training. Participates as an active member of the nursing team, accountable for your practice and role modelling the highest standards of care to all members of the team. Lead by example with drive and enthusiasm, responding appropriately to the needs of patients, families and carers. Responsible for assisting with the management and leadership of the department, maintaining an appropriate management style that maintains good morale, a team approach to work and a culture which fosters innovation and change. Assist the Sister/ Charge nurse in the monitoring of workload and skill mix, planning off duty and ensuring the ward operates effectively and safely. Assist the Sister/ Charge nurse in the completion of a training needs analysis and ensure compliance of the team with Trust expectations in relation to mandatory training and appraisals. Assist the Sister/ Charge nurse in managing the team in accordance with Trust policies and procedure Person Specification

Training/ Qualifications

Essential

Hold NMC registration A recognised teaching qualification Mentorship

Desirable

Cytotoxic chemotherapy qualification. Recent accredited Oncology or Haematology module Working towards a degree level qualification

Knowledge/ Experience

Essential

Demonstrates successful support of a ward/department manager. Willingness to partake in QI projects

Desirable

Previous experience of working in an Oncology/Haematology Previous people/ Team Management experience Level of knowledge related to chemotherapy Competent in SACT administration

Skills/ Abilities
