Edinburgh, United Kingdom Public Health Scotland Full time

About the Organisation:

Public Health Scotland launched 1st April 2020 as a national health board, employing around 1200 people, and with an annual budget of around £101 million. Public Health Scotland wants to see a Scotland where everybody thrives, a Scotland where life expectancy improves and the difference in life expectancy between our poorest and wealthiest areas gets smaller.

The Post:

An exciting opportunity has arisen in the Population Health and Wellbeing Directorate of PHS, who are recruiting to a Senior Health Improvement Officer role within the Health Equity and Inclusion Service. This national, permanent post will work closely with colleagues in PHS and key external stakeholders across the public sector (including Scottish Government, the NHS, local government, voluntary, community and private sectors).

The work of the directorate has a major impact on improving how PHS contributes to the reduction of health inequalities and improving the health and wellbeing of the most marginalised and excluded people in our communities. The post will be placed in the Health Improvement teams of Health Equity and Wellbeing and Place and Environment and Health Harms.

The Candidate:

You will have a sound understanding of structural and systemic health inequalities, the drivers and intent of equality and diversity, human rights and legislation and policy and its application in practice to the Public Sector in Scotland. You will have strong health improvement knowledge, skills and experience and a sound understanding of public health policy in Scotland.

The post holder will have outstanding interpersonal and written communication skills including presentation, group facilitation, influencing and negotiation, chairing and facilitating meetings, including the ability to assimilate complex information, summarise key issues and present in an effective format to a range of different audiences to improve practice. The post holder will display the Public Health Scotland values of: collaboration, integrity, respect, innovation and excellence in delivering all aspects of the role.

Location and Working Pattern:

The post is based in either Gyle Square, Edinburgh or Central Quay, Glasgow.

Please note that PHS will be relocating from Central Quay, Glasgow to Bothwell Street, Glasgow in October 2024.

We are currently hybrid working; therefore, you will be expected to spend time in both PHS offices as well as the option to work at home.

There will be an expectation to travel to local areas for some meetings and events.

Monday to Friday, 37 hours per week, however PHS supports flexible working and we are happy to discuss requests for alternative working patterns.

Currently, there is one post to be filled, should additional vacancies occur within 6 months, candidates who were not successful at this time, but appointable at interview, may be contacted within this time period to be offered a post.

During times of public health emergency, or other urgent business need, you may be required on a temporary basis to work your normal contracted working hours over 7 days including weekends, in order to meet the needs of the service.

Salary placement will start at the bottom point of the scale unless individuals have previous NHS experience.

It is a condition of this employment that you must live and remain a resident within the UK for the post in which you will be employed with PHS.

Benefits:

Ourbenefits package includes pension scheme, comprehensive range of work life balance policies, occupational health services, learning resource centres and discounted leisure, financial and shopping benefits.

Further Information:

Closing date for completed applications is 28th August 2024.
