An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced cardiac surgical nurse to join our expanding friendly Cardiac Surgical Unit as the Practice Development Nurse. The post holder will be responsible for developing and delivering education and development programmes to both junior and senior nurses on the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU), the Cardiac Surgical Step Down Unit and, where relevant, Cardiac Theatres and Albion and Lewes Ward.

As the lead for cardiac surgical education you will develop staff new to the areas, supporting them with clinical teaching and assessment of competence. You will work closely with the cardiac surgical nursing team to develop a culture of learning on the Units and Ward whilst liaising closely with the Cardiology Practice Educator. In addition you will be the recognised educational expert and resource for cardiac surgery within the Sussex Cardiac Centre.

You will need to be an experienced cardiac surgical care nurse with previous experience within practice development, a mentorship qualification, or equivalent, and proven clinical and managerial skills within a cardiac surgery critical care area.

Main duties of the job

To identify and promote evidence based nursing practice within cardiac surgery, through the implementation and facilitation of clinically based teaching and education, to ensure that staff are equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge to perform their roles competently.

Lead on the development programme for nurses new to the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU), Cardiac Surgical Step Down Unit and Albion and Lewes Ward (cardiac surgery care only), incorporating theoretical teaching, clinical skills assessment & the formulation of personal development plans. Facilitate the professional development and education of all members of staff in a positive learning environment. The post holder works closely with the lecturers for the critical care courses at the University of Brighton, ensuring links between theory and practice are securely comprehended and implemented.

As a lead specialist for education in the cardiac centre, provides specialist advice and guidance to other personnel, and within the field of cardiac surgery undertakes audit & implements research, and develops professional policies, standards & best practice guidelines. The role also involves representing the Trust at local and regional levels. The post holder works without direct supervision.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Work collaboratively with the senior nursing team(s) on CICU theCardiac Surgical Step Down Unit, Cardiac Theatres Nurse Manager, Albion and Lewes Ward (cardiac surgery care only) and Cardiology Practice Development Nurse, as appropriate, to develop an educational strategy for the units/ward which integrates a culture of learning and education. Develop a process of regular review and evaluation of progress.

Identify and co-ordinate the educational and professional development requirements of new staff and those staff currently working within cardiac surgery.

Co-ordinate the module applications for cardiac surgery for appropriate funding, being an expert resource to the cardiac managers in this area.

Support the statutory and mandatory training required by nursing staff working within cardiac surgery. Schedule training plans, regularly enter data on a training database and keep accurate data records according to Trust policy.

Facilitate the work of the Trust Nursing Strategy groups and clinical governance initiatives linked to cardiac surgery.

 Attend Trust Practice Educators meetings which highlight issues which are discussed at the Practice Educator Forum. Trust representative at University of Brighton, on the Intensive Care and Cardiology Nursing Course Boards. Member of regional Practice Educator group, ensuring cohesive work and education opportunities in relevant areas.

The post holder will be expected to have a role within the charity and be able to attend the Bursary and Grants committee meeting and make decisions on funding for courses, conferences and projects. The Sussex Heart Charity provide a vital source of funding for staff education. To encourage engagement from all staff to be aware of charity events so they can assist with the fundraising and/or take part in some events.

Act as an educational resource for the Sussex Cardiac Centre.
