The post is part-time at 12hrs per week.

You will need to be able to work autonomously and as part of a collaborative team. Working with the Head of Nursing, Matron and Ward manager to identify and promote evidence based clinical practice within the Vascular Ward, through the implementation and facilitation of clinically based teaching / education, to ensure that staff are equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge to perform their roles competently.

The post holder will be key in the delivery of an educational programme for staff new to the vascular ward environment, incorporating theoretical teaching, clinical skills assessment and formulation of personal development plans for all areas. This will involve supporting other wards within the Division and working cohesively in enhance patient pathways and staff development.

The post holder will be an expert in vascular conditions and will role model to staff assessment, planning and implementation of essential care skills. They will work closely with other health care professionals within the multidisciplinary team to ensure continuity of care.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will work alongside the Head of Nursing, Matron and Ward manager to assist in the development of quality Induction and Competency programmes. These must reflect contemporary practice whilst incorporating national guidance and support the Trust's clinical governance agenda.

As a practice development nurse, the post holder will be responsible for the induction programme of all new starters within the department, including Student Nurses, Training Nurse Associates, and international starters. They will also engage with the on-going development needs for staff as identified in individual appraisals.

As the Deputy Sister/Charge Nurse you will initiate and undertake / supervise specific projects and audits related to the professional development of nursing, monitoring standards of care and acting as an agent for change in achieving a culture that is flexible and responds positively to the demands and future development of the service. You will also undertake research and lead clinical audits in the specialist area.

The post holder will take responsibility for the creation of patient information through the CPIG process and review patient information ensuring it is up to date and formatted to the trust standard. They will understand and ensure procurement necessities are available and ensure staff are aware of equipment to support patient therapies.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Management  

Attend meetings as required by the Ward Manager.  To work within the NMC Code of Conduct at all times and adhere to health and safety legislation. To be responsible for the professional and operational delivery of high-quality clinical care standards ensuring that patients are always treated with dignity and respect.  To oversee department standards and monitoring of cleanliness, contributing and leading assessments/audits ensuring a clean environment for care, to include a clear oversight of the environment and facilities management services and maintenance issues.  Through being a role model create a culture which motivates, enthuses and empowers others to give their very best and challenges behaviours which fall short of those expected.  In the absence of the Ward Manager provide support on managerial issues to the senior nursing/management team.  Identifies incidences of concern to either patients or staff and deals effectively with the consequences, completing appropriate documentation (for example Datix).  Assist the Ward Manager in the review of systems of care and/or skill mix in response to or in anticipation of the changing needs of the service.  Act as an advocate for the patient/client ensuring the provision of appropriate information and support services. 

Leadership  

Be a positive role model to colleagues and junior staff on clinical and professional standards of practice.  Use initiative and discretion to manage workload independently. Accountable within Trust policies and procedures.  Act as an expert to other healthcare professionals, providing specialist clinical advice, guidance and support.  Be responsible for initiating and directing best practice and acting as a professional role model.  Safeguard the health, safety and welfare of staff, patients and visitors.  Responsibility for staff training in the use of key equipment within all areas.  Delegate and assign activities and tasks appropriately.

Clinical  

Provide professional leadership, motivation and supervision to ensure high standards of patient care are delivered.  Support all grades of nursing staff but in particular the department manager, in resolving clinical and operational issues while ensuring the fundamentals of care are right.  Act as a resource for staff offering expert tuition, support and guidance. This role demands expert knowledge, gained through extensive acute clinical experience, together with theoretical study.  Act as a role model both educationally and clinically, ensuring standards are met in clinical practice. Have the technical expertise to act as a trainer for medical devices and equipment, training nurses to ensure safety and competence in practice, thereby addressing issues of clinical risk. Maintain own clinical skills through working in practice alongside students or members of the nursing team.  Demonstrates an understanding and skill in the care and management of the vascular/surgical patient.  Organises time, equipment and staff to deliver effective and efficient outpatient nursing.  Ensures that all staff are competent in pre-operative assessment and documentation is completed accurately. 

Communication  

Communicates effectively with patients, their carers and co-workers.  Demonstrates good practice in the handling of bad news to patients, carers and junior staff according to the Trust’s Guidelines for the Handling of Bad News.  Work collaboratively with all members of the MDT to promote cohesive consistent best practice and share resources, ideas and knowledge.  Be an expert in relation to vascular conditions, effectively interpreting and communicating specialist information to colleagues and patients where appropriate.  Have excellent interpersonal, communication and team skills, liaising with patients and relatives, networking with other healthcare professionals and specialists, interpreting and sharing detailed and complex information.  Maintain accurate and relevant clinical notes and documentation on patients, ensuring confidentiality and adherence to the Data Protection Act is maintained and full and accurate records of relevant information is documented in patients’ records.  Disseminate accurate and pertinent information to nursing staff regarding professional nursing practice. 

Patient / Client Care  

Gives skilled care to patients and provides support to their carers  Supports the smooth flow of patient through the clinical area identifying and implementing changes in agreement with both the clinical and non-clinical managers of the services.  Administers drugs and treatments as prescribed according to the NMC guidelines and the Trust’s Guidelines for the Safe and Secure Handling of Medicines.  Works closely with all members of the care team to ensure the needs of the patient and their carers are met.  Assists the Ward Manager to develop and monitor systems to ensure co-ordinated and efficient patient movement throughout the outpatient experience. 

Service Delivery and Improvement  

Information Technology   Be able to access all required hospital IT systems such as Careflow and I-procurement.  IT skills sufficient to enable creation and sharing of documents including competencies and patient information. Policy and Service Development   Ensure competencies, policies and protocols are up to date.  Attend and lead PFIS improvement huddles.  Participates in departmental meetings, safety huddles and PFIS improvement huddles and helps promote new ideas to benefit care. 

People Management and Development  

Promote the development of an acceptable learning environment within the ward among qualified nursing staff.  Demonstrate a positive attitude to the supervision and mentoring of learners.  To be a resource for students and junior colleagues, facilitating the development of junior staff.  Assist in development and implementation of education strategies across the department to ensure staff are equipped with the right skills.  Co-ordinate education and professional development requirements of new staff and existing nursing staff.  Supervise the maintenance of the statutory and mandatory training required by nursing staff working in all departments and ensure accurate date records are maintained according to Trust policy.  Assist with the development of preceptorship programmes for all new staff.  Provide feedback and educational counselling to nurses in relation to their professional and personal development; assist staff in formulating personal development plans and portfolios.  Work alongside the Ward Manager to develop standards and guidelines to support training and development of staff.  Work along with the Ward Manager in ensuring competency skills are completed and reviewed yearly.  Attend mandatory and statutory training as required.  Attend relevant education, training and study days as required.  Safeguard the health, safety and welfare of staff, patients and visitors. Responsibility for staff training in the use of key equipment within all areas.  Learning and Development  Attend mandatory training updates as required.  Undertake training as necessary in line with the development of the post and as agreed with the line manager as part of the personal development process.  Achieve and demonstrate agreed standards of personal and professional development within agreed timescales.  Identify own learning needs and jointly plan training requirements with your line manager  Participate in the Trust’s appraisal process to discuss how your role will help deliver the best possible care to our patients and help to deliver any changes in service.
