Brighton, Brighton and Hove, United Kingdom University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust (279) Full time

Position Overview

We are seeking a proactive and enthusiastic Band 6 Senior Surgical Nurse to become a vital part of our dedicated team.

As a Senior Nurse, you are expected to demonstrate strong clinical, communication, mentoring, and leadership capabilities, with a keen interest in surgical nursing.

In return, we will provide you with opportunities to enhance your leadership and specialized clinical skills.

This is a remarkable opportunity for an experienced registered nurse to contribute significantly to the vascular nursing team. We are looking for candidates who can work either full-time or part-time hours.

Level 8 Tower Ward is a 37-bedded surgical inpatient unit, recognized as the regional center for complex vascular surgery. Our nursing team is among the most skilled in wound care management and pain control. The successful candidate will collaborate closely with the vascular nurse specialist and be part of a large multidisciplinary team.

You will be working alongside our new ward manager and matron during this exciting period of transformation.

This position is offered on a full-time basis (hours per week) and will involve long shifts from 07:00 to 19:30, including occasional night shifts from 19:00 to 07:30.

We encourage applications from individuals who hold a valid UK NMC registration. Please note that we are not currently hiring Internationally Qualified Nurses who require sponsorship.

Main Responsibilities

As a Senior Nurse, you will coordinate shifts on the ward, manage bed flow, and liaise with the clinical site management team. You will ensure that high standards and safe practices are maintained by junior staff members on the ward.

Collaboration with the vascular multidisciplinary team is essential to ensure that exceptional patient care standards are upheld throughout the patient journey. You will participate in board rounds and ward rounds, providing updates to the team regarding any changes.

Building effective working relationships with patients, relatives, caregivers, and ward staff is crucial to fostering a positive patient experience.

Your unique experiences will contribute to our innovative community, where everyone is encouraged to thrive. We offer various Staff Networks to help dismantle barriers and can provide a buddy system to assist new members in settling in. We are proud to be recognized as a Disability Confident Employer (Level 2) and a Veteran Aware Trust.

We treat our patients and staff with the compassion and empathy we expect for ourselves. We are committed to meeting their needs and going above and beyond to provide support. This commitment is reflected in our extensive Wellbeing Programme for staff, designed to assist you when needed—because we understand that to care for others, we must first care for ourselves.

As a university trust and a leader in healthcare research, we value learning, teaching, and training to ensure we can provide the best care possible. From your first day with us and throughout your career, we will support your growth and development. We hope that by choosing University Hospitals Sussex, you are embarking on a fulfilling career where you can see the impact of your work and feel valued for your contributions.

We look forward to welcoming you to our team.

Job Responsibilities

Level 8 Tower serves as the regional hub for complex vascular surgery. You will frequently take charge of the 37-bedded vascular ward, ensuring the coordination and direct provision of high-quality, patient-centered care by assessing nursing care and health education needs, as well as developing, implementing, and evaluating care for each patient. You will create a safe and effective care environment for individual patients, their families, and caregivers.

The successful candidate will initiate and oversee specific projects and audits related to the professional development of nursing, monitor care standards, and act as a change agent to foster a culture that is adaptable and responsive to the evolving demands of the vascular service.
