Job summary

The Clinical Studies Officer (CSO) is a key member of the Trusts Research and Development department. The principal purpose of the role is to work with clinical teams to assist in identifying and recruiting participants into Mental Health Mission studies including service users, carers and staff. The CSO also provides assistance with obtaining NHS Trust R&D approval, as well as other delegated tasks relating to research governance.

Main duties of the job

To assist clinical teams and NHS services in identifying potential participants eligible to take part in research projects and to provide information and support for patients, carers and staff involved in research projects;

To provide research teams with assistance in obtaining NHS Trust R&D approval and other governance requirements such as Honorary Contracts/Letters of Access;

To maintain close links with clinical services and departments across the Trust, working in partnership to set-up, plan and deliver on studies and maximise recruitment to-target and to-time;

To lead on planning recruitment strategies for research studies, monitoring delivery, maintaining excellent communication with all stakeholders, and working as a team to identify problems early on and problem solve;

There will be a requirement to travel across the Trust and mental health hubs, as well as sometimes further afield.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

Degree in Psychology or Health Professional qualification or registered Mental Health Nurse

Desirable

Relevant postgraduate qualification ICH Good Clinical Practice Phlebotomy trained

Knowledge and Nature of Experience

Essential

Formal research training (this may be as part of a degree course) Research experience (paid or voluntary) working as a researcher with at least 6 months of this being within the mental health field Professional familiarity with mental health and/or social care practice and terminology

Desirable

Experience working in an NHS environment with service user contact Experience of running concurrent research studies with minimal supervision according to good clinical practice guidelines Previous clinical trials experience

Analytical and Judgement Skills

Essential

Excellent organisational skills The ability to establish appropriate documentation and record keeping

Project management experience

Professional/Managerial/Specialist Knowledge

Essential
