Working in the Major Projects team and reporting to the Senior Partnerships Manager, First Light, the Researcher, First Light will research and communicate stories relating to the themes of our major capital project to redevelop the Royal Observatory. The Researcher, First Light will work with our content and engagement teams to delve into the themes of the site, galleries and displays, discovering stories which have a resonance with our diverse and target audiences. The postholder will work with the Content and Engagement teams to find ways of sharing these stories and connections through different methods, enriching the experiences that visitors have when they visit the Royal Observatory. Their findings will feed into the new exhibitions, engagement programmes, any multimedia guides on site or associated web or social media content.

The role is related to an application for NLHF funding for the project and will only be appointed if successful.

Further key responsibilities include actively engaging with and advocating for local communities and target audiences to understand what stories they would like to know and understand more about. The Researcher, First Light will build on existing research into less visible stories such as those of women at the Observatory, and diversity in our collections. They will work with the First Light project team, including Curators and Astronomers, to identify where and how we can share these stories. The postholder will also work with the Talent Acquisition and Volunteer Manager to support the development of a volunteer programme for First Light.

The successful candidate will need to have demonstrable experience of carrying out high quality historical research using a variety of sources, working with museum or heritage collections and their stories, and developing content for exhibitions and digital platforms. Previous experience of working on audience engagement projects that encourage participation and dialogue is essential, as is experience of sensitively working with new audiences to identify barriers to engagement. The postholder will have an enthusiasm for STEAM and heritage learning and an excellent ability to communicate that enthusiasm, particularly in engaging non-specialist audiences with ideas and issues.

This is a fixed term, permanent role in band 6 – Management and Technical Specialists. Core hours of work will be 36 per week, working 5 days between the hours of 9am-5pm, although due to the nature of the work, some flexibility may be required, including the possibility of evening and weekend work.
