Exhibitions Interpretation Curator, First Light
3 weeks ago
Situated within a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Royal Museums Greenwich is a collection of diverse historical sites. The sites are the National Maritime Museum, Cutty Sark, the Royal Observatory, and the Queen’s House. Each of these sites has a unique identity and a common purpose to serve our communities, through sharing our collections and expertise. We are a place to explore the sea, space, art and history, and our new strategy puts our people at the core of its success.
Working in the Major Projects team and reporting to the Senior Content Curator, the Exhibitions Interpretation Curator will primarily focus on creating content to be used onsite and online as part of the First Light project, a major project to transform the Royal Observatory Greenwich. Key responsibilities include working collaboratively with the project team to develop new exhibitions at the Royal Observatory, contributing to the development of design briefs and working with designers, and exploring exhibition and gallery narratives, ensuring content is intellectually accessible for a broad audience. The postholder will take a lead role in exhibition interpretation using a wide variety of techniques, working closely with colleagues from across the museum to research, develop and evaluate displays and display components.
The successful candidate will need to have demonstrable experience of working on the development of major permanent or temporary exhibitions and substantial exhibition interpretation experience. Knowledge of astronomy/history of astronomy or history of science, experience of working on the development of major permanent or temporary exhibitions, an interest and curiosity in Science, Technology, Engineering. Art and Maths (STEAM) and experience of interpretation planning for a wide range of audiences (from early years Foundation students to academics) in a museum, science centre or heritage context are all essential. The postholder will understand different ways to deliver content and have an ability to layer information using varying interpretative techniques. Proven communication skills – written and oral – with the ability to simplify and communicate complex concepts to a broad audience, are also essential to this role.
This is a fixed-term post to deliver the First Light project, with potential for extension. Core hours of work will be 36 per week, 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday, with an additional hour to be worked as agreed upon with the line manager.
We offer a culture encouraging inclusion and diversity, pension, 22 days annual leave (rising to 25 after 1 year), training and development, an environment with flexible working options as well as many more.
