Description:

We are seeking a Curator to join the Exhibitions Team at Somerset House Trust.


You will be responsible for the successful delivery of exhibitions, commissions, and special projects, working alongside guest collaborators and internal teams.

You will combine exhibition-making experience with a passion for contemporary culture, bringing expertise from any artistic discipline, while being able to work nimbly across artforms, supporting artists and creatives in the realisation of their ideas.

You will hold diversity and inclusion as core values in your curatorial practice, additionally informed by a breadth of lived experience.


What we are looking for:

Programme

  • Working with the Director of Exhibitions, Senior Curator and Head of Exhibitions Management, you will contribute to the delivery of multidisciplinary exhibitions, commissions, and projects across a range of topics and media
  • Research and contribute your own project proposals and ideas, as well as potential collaborative opportunities with guest curators, in keeping with the exhibition strategy
  • Work with guest curators/artists/creatives as a cocurator, helping to shape and realise their visions into groundbreaking, accessible and relevant exhibitions
  • Maintain networks with artists, curators, creative colleagues, and peer organisations, to assist with initiating and executing exhibitions, loans and commissions and in creating potential partnerships for Somerset House
  • Help devise and deliver initiatives to ensure Somerset House meets its aims to engage wide and diverse audiences
  • Build collaborative relationships with crossdepartmental stakeholders such as Inclusive Talent Engagement, Digital, Press, Development, Marketing, Studios, Retail and Live Events

Exhibitions, Commissions, and Projects

  • Working collaboratively with the Exhibition Managers, lead projects from initial development to delivery
  • Negotiate loans and liaise with artists, lenders, public and private institutions, galleries and collections
  • Lead and work closely with any external curators on projects, ensuring curatorial oversight and management of the project curatorial team to meet Somerset House programme and budgetary needs
  • Write informative and accessible interpretation for all projects, online or in print
  • Lead, coordinate and manage the design and delivery of all interpretation for projects, working with the appointed graphic designers.
  • With the Exhibition Managers, develop exhibitions and projects within budget and time constraints, ensuring work lists and commissions are confirmed with enough time to ensure best value can be obtained without compromising high standards of presentation
  • Ensure due diligence on provenance and work values where required
  • Work with Press and Marketing teams to promote projects to as large and inclusive an audience as possible
  • Work closely with colleagues in Digital, Inclusive Talent Engagement, and Live Events to ensure alignment in development of programming for exhibitions and projects
  • Contribute to the formulation of budgets and forecasts for exhibition costs, working closely with the Director of Exhibitions, Head of Exhibitions Management and Exhibition Managers
  • Contribute to and review all didactic and documentary material and all sponsorship and publicity material, including leaflets, press releases, etc. in consultation with the relevant departments at Somerset House
  • Support the Development team on funding strategies for exhibitions and present sponsorship proposals where required
  • Support the exhibitions programme through talks, tours, events and other public programme for a variety of audiences

Management

  • Work collaboratively in the Exhibitions team and with colleagues across all departments, ensuring colleagues are aware of projects in advance and across any updates and changes
  • Foster a supportive working environment through leadership of project teams
  • Deputise for senior management as required
  • Manage and lead external curators and contractors
  • Manage team assistant and admin staff as and when required, including temporary or projectspecific staff

Skills, knowledge & expertise required for the role:

  • A wide-ranging interest in contemporary culture, creative cross-overs, and ideas that interrogate what it means to live in the world today. This could include an artistic specialism, such as design or fashion, and including creative technology and the digital realm.
  • Postgraduate qualification or equivalent exhibitions experience
  • A curious and playful approach to exhibitionmaking, with an ability to ask provocative questions that challenge the past, question the present and face the future, and with an interest in advancing underrepresented perspectives.
  • You will be able to work collaboratively, as a cohesive part of a team, supporting and assisting in the shape and form of ideas, initiatives and projects that are not your own.
