Edinburgh, United Kingdom General Synod Office of the Scottish Episcopal Church Full time
  • Hybrid: Edinburgh. It is expected that the post-holder will work at least part of the week in the office (office days are negotiable).
  • Closing 3rd September 2024
  • Advertised from 9th August 2024
  • This post is offered as a full-time role (35 hours per week); however, a four-day work week will be considered with pay and holidays adjusted.
Role

Are you a qualified finance expert looking for your next challenge?

The General Synod Office of the Scottish Episcopal Church is seeking a Chief Finance Officer (also known as ‘Treasurer’) to manage and develop a small team and to bring a strategic approach to the financial management of the Church. This is an exciting and varied role, offering the post-holder the opportunity to support the Church at local, regional and national levels.

About you: You should be an experienced and qualified finance professional, able to inspire a team, communicate with a wide range of people and manage a broad portfolio of work. You may be working at a senior level already, or you may be an ambitious and talented upper-middle manager looking for your next step up the ladder.

Candidates for this role need not have worked in a church setting before, bringing experience of management roles in other public, private or third sector organisations. There is also no requirement for church membership. We are an inclusive employer and welcome applications from people of all backgrounds.

About us: The Scottish Episcopal Church (SEC) is the Province of the Anglican Communion in Scotland. It has a strong and high profile in Scottish life, is diverse in character and has a presence across the nation. The SEC is an open, thoughtful, and engaging church with over 270 congregations (or ‘charges’).

Total annual income across the whole Church is in the region of £20 million per annum. The bulk of income and expenditure is at the local congregational level: clergy stipends are generally paid locally. The General Synod (the governing body of the Church) spends in the region of £3m each year on activities to enable the mission and ministry of the national Church and support its own administration. The money for this comes from two main sources: from investments in the Unit Trust Pool, which account for 68% of income; and from quota from dioceses, which makes up 22%. You can find a copy of our 2023 Annual Report and Accounts here.

Salary and benefits: salary: £62,000 (with annual increments rising to £67K); holidays: 28 days of annual leave, plus seven statutory holidays (3 days of annual leave to be taken over the Christmas period); pension: a non-contributory defined pension scheme which allows additional voluntary contributions.

Hours and location: This post is offered as a full-time role (35 hours per week); however, a four-day work week will be considered with pay and holidays adjusted. Our office is located in Edinburgh, easily accessible via public transport; it also has a small car park. It is expected that the post-holder will work at least part of the week in the office (office days are negotiable).
