Job summary

We are excited to have been awarded charitable funds to pilot dedicated psychology support for those living with, or at risk of, rare and inherited conditions within the West Midlands. This post, based in Clinical Genetics at Birmingham Women's Hospital, within a mutually supportive team of Clinical Geneticists and Genetic Counsellors will undertake psychological assessments and interventions to children, adults and young people with arrange of needs and diagnoses.

This post provides a great opportunity to consolidate and expand on previous experience of working within health settings and/or with adults, children, young people and families. The job role provides a variety of ways of working within a dynamic medical setting including 1:1 therapy with outpatients, working with adults, families, groups for parents and young people and consultations via clinics. There are also lots of opportunities for indirect working through multidisciplinary teams, contributing to the psychological care planning and supporting/ developing 'psychological mindedness' within multidisciplinary teams.

Main duties of the job

The role provides psychological interventions for patients living with, or at risk of, a range of rare and inherited disease across the West Midlands region such as:

Supporting those with or at risk of rare disease with the lifelong burden and psychological challenges of rare and inherited disease, Aiding adjustment for those undergoing or having received the result of presymptomatic testing for serious degenerative or neuropsychiatric conditions, those increasing the risk of sudden cardiac death or of cancer. Facilitating decision making including for those with an elevated risk of inherited cancer considering prophylactic risk reducing surgery. Supporting individuals with conditions with stigma such as disorders of sexual differentiation, infertility and disfigurement. Supporting the processes of grief, loss and bereavement inherent in genetic conditions.

HCPC accredited psychology doctorate including: Clinical Psychology Doctorate Counselling Psychologist Health Psychology Doctorate HCPC registered Practitioner Psychologist

Knowledge & Nature of Experience

Experience of working with children /adolescents/adults/family systems Experience of working with people with rare and/or genetic conditions Experience of conducting and interpreting cognitive assessments

Experience of working in an inpatient and/or acute health setting

Professional/Managerial/Specialist Knowledge

Experience of psychological assessments Understanding of specialist psychological literature/ guidelines Ability to use IT to prepare reports Confidence & experience of using Microsoft systems (Outlook, Word, Powerpoint, etc) Confidence and experience with using common NHS IT systems Electronic Patient Record (EPR), Electronic Staff Record (ESR)
