Job summary

The Clinical Associate in Psychology (CAP) are a new addition to the Psychological workforce and support the wider NHS agenda to develop and expand the psychological provision. A CAP is a semi-autonomous psychological practitioner working under the direct supervision of an experienced and HCPC registered clinical psychologist, within their scope of practice. CAPs are scientist practitioners who utilise psychological knowledge, research and theory to reduce psychological distress and to enhance psychological wellbeing in the clients they work with. They work with specific client groups in a range of services, acting as a resource of psychological skill and competence to a team of healthcare practitioners. They are trained to provide effective evidence-based care to National and local guidelines and will manage a caseload and take responsibility for proactive care delivery decisions, within their scope of practice and under the supervision of a clinical psychologist. Upon completion of the qualification, the role with be a band 6 CAP at Health in Mind and the expectation is that you will commit to staying at Health in Mind for 2 year after qualifying.

Main duties of the job

The CAP will be trained to plan, assess, implement and evaluate programmes of care. CAPs are expected to maintain a compassionate, caring and safe care environment. The band 5 CAP Apprenticeship (funded through an apprenticeship scholarship, which is subject to the 2 year NHS psychology professions training rule) is currently an eighteen-month full-time training divided between work-based practice, academic teaching (at university) and study, leading to a Masters-level qualification. The university teaching will comprise of some teaching blocks on campus at the University of Exeter (3-4 one-week blocks over the duration of course). Upon completion of the qualification, the role with be a band 6 CAP at Health in Mind and the expectation is that you will commit to staying at Health in Mind for 2 years after qualifying.

You will be working as a member of the Health in Mind team, a service for children and young people experiencing psychological challenges relating to their physical health. You will be working with individuals as well as their carers, offering 1:1, group and family interventions. You will be supervised by a clinical psychologist and will attend team meetings. In addition, you will work alongside and have the support of Health in Mind, a large team with clinical psychologists, trainee psychologists, assistant psychologists and a consultant liaison psychiatrist, as well as many colleagues and multidisciplinary teams across the Trust.

An honours degree (or equivalent) in Psychology at or better OR Successful completion of a BPS accredited post-graduate Psychology conversion programme with equivalent or above. OR a honours degree (or equivalent) in Psychology with appropriate additional experience (or contextual information) demonstrating academic potential. Eligibility for Graduate Basis for Chartered membership of the British Psychological Society Further continuing professional development relevant to work in mental health and/or psychological interventions Evidence of passing English and Maths at Level 2 (Proof required for apprenticeship eligibility) Graduate level knowledge of psychological theory and research. Graduate level knowledge of mental health presentations. An awareness of wider healthcare systems, NHS services and the role of psychological services within the NHS. Paid or voluntary experience relevant to working in health, mental health and/or psychological service settings, including work in community groups. Experience of working in a setting with service users presenting with complex mental health needs Experience of working within a multidisciplinary team. Experience of working with carers. Experience of working with groups and/or delivering group interventions. Computer literacy and relevant IT skills. Skills in managing time and workload in the context of multiple competing demands. Ability to undertake Masters level study. Ability to work with people from a wide range of backgrounds.
