Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated person to work on Ward 9 surgical ward as a Band 6 Sister/Charge Nurse. As a member of the team you will deliver high standards of care to our patients, working closely with our neighbouring trauma and orthopaedic and general surgery wards. You will provide good leadership to the nursing team and be a positive role model. You will assist the senior sister to run the ward efficiently and safely.

Main duties of the job

To be professionally accountable and maintain the standards of professional practice as set by the appropriate regulatory body applicable to your profession or role.

To deliver compassionate person-centred care, and treat patients, service users, their families and their carers with consideration, dignity and the respect you would want for yourself or your family.

To support and deputise for the Senior Sister / Charge Nurse in ensuring the standards of professional practice as set out by appropriate regulatory body applicable to your profession or role are maintained.

Utilise clinical proficiency in delivering a high standard of nursing care. Provide managerial and leadership skills to support the Senior Sister / Charge Nurse and nursing team to deliver continually improved standards and efficient and effective use of resources.

Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust provides integrated acute and community Healthcare in the West Midlands serving a population of 260,000 residents. Walsall Manor Hospital houses the full range of district general hospital services. The £170 million development was completed in 2010 and we are continually upgrading. Construction of the new integrated critical care unit was completed in 2018, extension of a Neonatal Unit and an approved plan to build a brand new, state of the art Emergency Department which will commence in 2021

Main Responsibilities

Assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates nursing care to meet the needs of patients. Support the nursing staff in leading a team in the provision of care. Will lead a daily safety huddles and disseminate pertinent information to colleagues, escalate issues in a timely manner. Provides first level registered nurse support to junior nursing staff. Assist in the teaching and supervision of trained and untrained staff including, where applicable, learner nurses. To be aware of, fully observe and contribute to the maintenance of a safe environment having due regard to legislative and Trust requirements. Deliver Health Promotion to the patients. Fulfil the requirement to meet revalidation and registration through Continual Practice Development and training, as the profession develops. Assist senior nursing in the maintenance of efficient and effective utilisation of Department resources. Be accountable and responsible for record keeping by ensuring all work is accurate and legible in accordance with local policies and Nursing and Midwifery Council guidelines. To be aware and observe fully the employees duties under the health and

i. Safety at Work Act and to observe all the Trust policies relating to Health

ii. and Safety and Risk Management. To monitor and report risks and support

iii. others in maintaining a safe environment and security of the building.

The post holder must achieve and maintain competence in identified mandatory and statutory training, develop, and maintain clinical competencies, skills and knowledge which relate to the area of clinical practice. The post holder must respond to patients, relative and carers concerns as they arise and take remedial action as required. The post holder will take charge of the practice setting as required/ or a defined area of the practice setting. The post holder will assume responsibility for undertaking tasks delegated by the nominated line/shift manager. This may include representing the practice setting at meetings, link nurse responsibilities, audit, governance initiatives and supervision and role competence assessments for unregistered nurses and students/ trainees. Administer medications as per Trust policies.Independent or supplementary prescribing of medicinal products within own specialist field. The post holder is required to undertake duties having regard to the NMC Code of Professional Conduct for the Nurse, Midwife and Health Visitor and the Scope of Professional Practice.

To manage and develop the performance of the team and self

Act as a positive role model, adhering to expected standards of behaviour, promoting a supportive ethos to empower staff to contribute to the delivery of high-quality person-centred care. Lead by example, developing self and other staff and influencing the way care is provided in a manner that is innovative, open and responds to individual needs in line with the NHS duty of candour. Support the appraisal process by ensuing that personal development plans are developed for adefined nursing team and that they are consistent with the teams / wards and organisations objectives, succession planning and workforce development and support professional revalidation. Contribute to any management of change within the ward / clinical environment supporting a continuous improvement cycle. Establish and support robust communication networks within the team. Work harmoniously and effectively with colleagues, patients and clients and their carers, families and friends. In the absence of the Senior Sister / Charge Nurse take all reasonable care of health and safety at work for you, your team and others and to co-operate with employers to ensure compliance with health and safety requirements. Report incidents and near misses promptly an appropriately and take effective action to minimise future risk.

Communication and collaboration

Use professional judgement to intercede and act as patient advocate, observing

changes in patients attitude, behaviour and emotional state

Facilitate patient flow, clinic operations and case load coordination through liaison with the nurse in charge/ supervisor/care groups. Maintain a safe, clean environment. Ensure that hazards on the ward are reported appropriately without delay, and ensure all equipment required is in good working order and repost appropriately if defective Address any immediate concerns or complaints as they arise, and escalate / report as required Take charge of the shift/ area / department in the absence of more senior staff and Escalate staffing concerns using the approved process

Be wholly accountable for his/her practice and maintaining their professional

registration in line with the NMC Code of Professional Standards of Practice and

Behaviour for Nurses and Midwives (current version)
