Job Overview

The Acute Kidney Injury (AKI) Specialist Nurse will engage in innovative and evidence-based nursing practices, providing professional leadership while collaborating closely with the clinical team, including Matrons and Sister/Charge Nurses. This role involves supporting the establishment of an AKI care pathway and enhancing the reporting processes for AKI stages 2 and 3, alongside facilitating a thorough Root Cause Analysis (RCA) process.

As a Specialist Nurse, you will serve as a credible and professional role model, fostering the development of staff both personally and professionally to help them reach their full potential.

You will also share responsibilities for implementing and developing care standards, ensuring that nursing practices are grounded in evidence according to professional and national guidelines.

Furthermore, the Specialist Nurse will contribute to the design and execution of educational and developmental plans, which include induction, mentoring, preceptorship, and ongoing professional development for staff.

Key Responsibilities

Facilitate effective communication to clarify responsibilities within the multi-professional team. Exchange verbal and written information with patients, staff, and caregivers, requiring tact and diplomacy to overcome any barriers to understanding. Address patient concerns and collaborate with the Patient Advisory and Liaison Service (PALS) and patient forums, participating in the resolution of complaints and adverse incidents. Liaise with clinical experts in critical care to ensure that clinical practices are reflective of current best practices. Participate in the annual appraisal process, with the first appraisal occurring within the initial months of appointment. Disseminate information related to clinical standards to promote ownership among the clinical team. Utilize strong presentation skills to conduct training and educational sessions, accommodating varying levels of understanding in both small and large groups. Engage in gathering feedback on patient experiences.

About the Organization

Prioritize and organize workload effectively. Contribute to clinical governance principles, ensuring quality standards are established and monitored, integrating clinical risk management and audit into ward functions. Plan and facilitate educational development programs for clinical staff, collaborating with link nurses to foster a learning environment within the clinical area.

Job Responsibilities

Adhere to the NMC Code of Professional Conduct for Nurses, Midwives, and Health Visitors, maintaining accountability for clinical practice and professional actions, ensuring ongoing registration with the NMC. Develop specialized care programs and packages, providing expert advice on care. Offer specialist nursing advice tailored to the unique needs of patients within the specialty.

Qualifications

Essential

Degree in Nursing. Commitment to ongoing personal and professional development, with a postgraduate qualification or equivalent experience and knowledge.

Master’s degree or working towards one. Qualification in Counseling.

At least 3 years of post-registration experience, including 1 year in a management or leadership role. 18 months of experience in Renal Nursing. Strong communication skills.
