Southampton, United Kingdom Southern Health NHS Foundation Trust Full time

Job summary

We are recruiting a passionate and committed Principal Clinical/Forensic Psychologist with a strong background in delivering psychological care. This is an exciting opportunity to advance your management and leadership skills in a dynamic environment.

Bluebird House provides care, treatment, and support for young people with complex mental health problems posing a risk to themselves or others. The unit is a safe and secure environment to encourage recovery and well-being, with support provided 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

The unit works closely with our other low secure CAMHS units (Leigh House and Austen House), and our new PICU. All units share a model of care and are committed to delivering least restrictive practices.

A confident practitioner with substantial clinical experience in adult inpatient, forensic, CAMHS, or similar services, you will lead, supervise, and manage the psychological therapies team, fostering a psychologically informed environment based on principles of attachment and trauma, as well as playing a strategic role in supporting new developments and creating care pathways for young people, their families, and carers.

In return we offer a competitive salary, enrolment in our fantastic NHS pension scheme, robust training budget to support your continuing professional development, access to a network of applied psychologists across secure and adolescent inpatient settings, and supervision from the Divisional Director of Psychological Therapies.

Main duties of the job

The postholder will work alongside other psychological therapy colleagues (psychologists, assistant psychologists, creative therapists, and systemic family therapists) and a comprehensive multi-disciplinary team. The work involves supporting staff working with highly complex cases, and individual and group work. The role will involve training and workforce development to enable an understanding of the psychological aspects of a young person's risk and mental health conditions, and the development of psychologically informed formulations and risk management plans.

In particular, the post-holder will:

Take clinical leadership responsibility for the implementation and coordination of psychological care for the inpatient unit they are responsible for.

Ensure the systematic provision of high-quality specialist psychological services for young people and their families/ carers, with an emphasis on co-production, dealing primarily with complex psychological problems, using an Attachment and Trauma model of care, and to support the development of a psychological milieu and trauma informed approach to care.

The post-holder will undertake complex assessments and intervention strategies, including specialist neuropsychological assessment; offer consultancy and provide expert advice to multidisciplinary colleagues, and the wider clinical multi-professional team, other agencies and non-professional carers.
