Job summary

We're looking for an enthusiastic, self-motivated and forward-thinking candidate to lead on sustainable travel across two of the largest NHS Trusts in the country; Guy's and St Thomas' and King's College Hospital NHS Foundation Trusts.

You will be an integral part of the joint Sustainability team working across both Trusts. You will lead on delivering the Guy's and St Thomas' Green Travel Plan and King's Travel Plan initiatives, such as providing e-bikes for our community-based clinical teams and finding innovative ways to increase awareness of the Trusts' sustainable travel agenda. You will also have a large amount of autonomy to develop your own initiatives.

You will be an excellent communicator, able to relay complex information around carbon emissions and travel and transport data to a range of different audiences, such as senior leaders, funders and internal stakeholders in an engaging and tangible manner.

You will use your stakeholder engagement skills to help the Trusts' diverse group of staff and patients understand the importance of decarbonising our travel and transport footprint, through leading and supporting our existing staff travel and sustainability networks.

You'll also have an excellent understanding of the key transport challenges facing the NHS, London, and the UK, and be able to interpret policy at sector-specific, local, regional and national levels on sustainable transport to fit the needs of the Trusts.

Main duties of the job

Responsible for the implementation and monitoring of key performance indicators of the Trust Sustainability strategy / Green Plan relating to the Transport emissions objective of reaching significant reductions in emissions from staff and patient travel Implement, promote, monitor and review the Green Travel Plans in line with the 'travel hierarchy' Finalise the implementation of, promote, monitor and review the Sustainable Travel Policy Monitor and develop active, sustainable travel infrastructure, such as secure cycle parking and the provision of showers and lockers Coordinate and grow the Green Travel Network

About us

The Sustainable Travel Officer role sits within the Essentia Directorate working across Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust and King's College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. There is also potential for the role to be working across Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust in the future.

Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust and King's College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust are two of the biggest and busiest trusts in the country with approximately 37,000 staff members and four million annual patient contacts between them.

Guy's and St Thomas' sites are St Thomas' Hospital, Royal Brompton Hospital, Evelina London Children's Hospital, Guy's Hospital, Harefield Hospital and community services in Lambeth and Southwark.

King's provides services from King's College Hospital Denmark Hill, Princess Royal University Hospital, Orpington Hospital, Queen Mary's Hospital Sidcup and Beckenham Beacon.

Essentia is part of Guy's and St Thomas's NHS Foundation Trust. Responsible for non-clinical healthcare services, Essentia designs, builds and maintains healthcare infrastructure vital to the smooth running of healthcare services. Essentia employs around 2,000 people.

Sustainability

The partner Trusts have publicly launched Sustainability strategies/Green Plans, and the South East London ICS has also launched its Green Plan. The Trusts' ambitious missions in sustainability focus on three strategic themes: Carbon Zero, Connecting With Nature, and Cycle of Resources.

Educated to degree level or equivalent qualification or experience Evidence of recent Continuing Professional Development

Desirable

Environmental sciences related degree or equivalent qualification/training and experience Specialist post graduate/Masters level qualification or significant in depth relevant post graduate experience in this area

Previous experience

Essential

Experience of developing, writing, implementing, promoting, monitoring and reviewing Travel Plans Proven practical experience of developing and implementing sustainable travel initiatives successfully in a large complex organisation Previous project management experience with travel and transport projects Knowledge and experience of broader sustainability agenda and relevance to public sector organisations Previous demonstrable experience of data collection, presentation and report writing

Knowledgeable around national, regional and sector mandates and statutory legislation relating to travel Good knowledge around sustainable travel and transport practices in the context of environmental and social responsibility, underpinned by theoretical knowledge from study and relevant practical experience Ability to set and review project targets and adjust activity to meet targets Able to develop, implement, promote, monitor and review organisational strategies, policies and processes including Travel Plans Specialist knowledge and practical experience of managing large scale organisation wide travel related awareness and action programmes Ability to translate and explain complex and/or politically sensitive information to a varied audience including board members, heads of service, staff and patients, and seeking board or senior level approval for change Demonstrable negotiation and influencing skills with the ability to persuade colleagues to engage in culture and behaviour change while remaining calm and effective during difficult situations Able to manage complex travel related datasets including recording, collating, monitoring and reviewing Methodical approach and attention to detail, able to identify and analyse trends and patterns
