Job summary

The Acute Oncology Nurse Specialist will play a Key role In the Acute Oncology Service (AOS) team for the delivery of a comprehensive acute oncology service within the Trust In line with the NICE guidelines for acute oncology services and the standards for acute oncology. The post holder will provide early input into:o Faster and better care of patients with complications of chemotherapy, including Neutropenic sepsis (early recognition, better treatment, early discharge).o Faster and better care of patients with complications of cancer (early recognition, better treatment, rapid referral back to specialist oncology team, palliative care team etc.).o Care and support of patients receiving chemotherapy that have an allergic reaction to the chemotherapy or patients who suffer and Education, training and support to peers and colleagues in relation to AOS Data collection to demonstrate activity and Actively seek to improve AOS.

Main duties of the job

Places quality at the heart of practice by delivering evidence based Individualized care, through holistic needs assessment, planning and evaluation of care to patients referred to the AOS Clinical Nurse Triage patients who have contacted the 24-hour telephone helpline or who have attended as an unplanned presentation of emergency admission using an agreed tool to support the collection of essential information required to aid the assessment of the patient and the decision Provide specialist advice, support and education to cancer patients and their carers during treatment and follow up Acts as a Keyworker for clinical caseload of patients receiving chemotherapy and incorporates the responsibilities of the keyworker role, working to coordinate care provide easy access for on-going support for patients, in all clinical areas within the Trust and at home by Uses advanced communication skills in all aspects of patient assessment, care, and Acts as patient advocate when Support the care of patients who experiences an allergic reaction or extravasation as part of their chemotherapy Be competent to deliver chemotherapy.

Qualifications

Essential

NMC Registered Nurse Degree Qualification in Nursing /Health related subject, undertaking a degree or willingness to undertake Evidence of Continued Professional Development UKONS SACT passport or equivalent

Desirable

Advanced Communication Skills Training Psychological Support Level 2 Training Oncology qualification/Experience or equivalent Evidence of Leadership development/qualification Mentorship qualification, ENB 998 or equivalent Research Qualification Masters level or prepared to work towards

Teaching experience Previous experience at Band 6 with evidence of post registration training Experience of Multi-professional / MDT working Experience of Breaking Bad news and/or delivering complex and life altering diagnosis Knowledge of cancer care pathways, cancer pathophysiology, treatment, and control Experience of delivering AOS care Experience of medication administration under PGD
