Online Fraud Investigator

Summary of Role
To investigate referrals from the Accounts Investigation Team in connection with suspected fraudulent customer returns.
As the Online Fraud Investigator you will be responsible for investigating and confirming if fraud has taken place and identifying the person responsible. You will then assess if the relevant evidential burden of proof has been met to allow further action to be taken, including civil recovery and criminal proceedings.
You will then prepare evidential case files to be passed to our field teams, civil recovery partners and relevant industry bodies and police forces for further action.
Responsibilities
Interpretation and Investigation of Data
Undertake detailed fraud investigations to detect and prevent fraud and organised crime, tackling attempted account fraud of over £XXm per annum across all delivery channels for both cash and credit. Build case files based on an evidence-led approach and in line with all regulatory requirements with the ultimate aim of civil recovery and/or criminal prosecution. Protect the business from potential losses across the online arena, including refund abuse, account, item and internal fraud. Interrogate Online Systems and Loss Prevention tools for the purpose of detecting criminal activity in real time to facilitate disruption and enforcement in the field. Make autonomous decisions for all fraud investigations, taking accountability and responsibility for those decisions. Analyse information for the purpose of identifying fraud trends and suspicious activity, linking evidence to prove serious and organised crime. Utilising the internet and other 3rd party systems as investigative tools. Investigate and interrogate item related queries in excess of £XXm per annum, passing efficient evidence to the field teams with the aim of recovering funds and limiting claims and returns abuse. Act as a subject matter expert to the Operational and Field Teams in relation to returns fraud, resolving complex queries Respond to production orders from law enforcement agencies, providing all relevant information to accompany an official witness statement, representing Next in court as required. Identify process failures and make recommendations to the Head of Online Loss Prevention to improve service and reduce losses. Knowledge of SQL as a tool to extract and interrogate data. Respond to ad-hoc requests for support and reporting from the Head of Online Loss Prevention. Liaising with 3rd parties to gather further intel in order to strengthen evidence used in fraud cases.Communication
The ability to communicate effectively at all levels, passing on all relevant information needed to take appropriate action, without unnecessarily holding back vital intelligence. Liaise with 3rd party agencies such as the Police and NBCS to aid in external investigations, providing key evidence to be used in court. Represent Next in court, providing evidence that has been gathered as part of fraud investigations. Act as a subject matter expert to the Operational and Field Teams in relation to fraud, resolving complex queriesCriteria
