Job summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen and we are looking for an experienced, motivated Orthoptist to join the Orthoptics team at Heartlands, Good Hope and Solihull Hospitals, part of the University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust.
The post-holder will Lead the Orthoptic Service at Solihull Hospital taking full responsibility for the daily management of the service at this site. deputising as required for the Head Orthoptist in the delivery of services and will work with the Head Orthoptist in recruitment, retention, training and development of staff and the orthoptic service.
The post-holder will deliver effectively both as an individual and as part of a team highly specialist levels of orthoptic investigation and management and will use advanced clinical reasoning and evidence-based practice to differentially diagnose and treat a range of conditions as necessary.
The postholder will work as an active member of the multidisciplinary team and will also be required to provide education to undergraduate orthoptic students, optometrists and other health care professionals.
The post-holder will undertake clinical audit and take responsibility for own continuing professional development and will work in accordance with Trust Policies, Procedures and Guidelines.

Key responsibilities will include the day to day running of the Orthoptic Department at Solihull Hospital, ensuring that clinical activity is prioritised in times of staff shortages.
To ensure that adequate staffing levels are maintained and an effective and efficient service is delivered at all times.
To deputise, as agreed, for the Head Orthoptist at meetings and forums across the Trust and externally.
To ensure that policies and procedures are implemented locally and that robust management and monitoring systems are in place to ensure that clinical governance requirements are achieved and maintained.
To work closely with the Head Orthoptist in the development of local clinical protocols and guidelines, ensuring that clinical practice is based on national guidance and evidence based practice.
To manage and deal with any complaints locally, actively problem solving and liaising with other Trust staff (PALS, Customer Services) to ensure an effective outcome for staff or patient as required by the Head Orthoptist.
To triage all referrals for Orthoptics. To triage Orthoptics referrals for the Consultant Paediatric and Strabismic Ophthalmologist.
To act as a professional role model in maintaining an up to date knowledge of techniques and technology.
