The Department of Computing is one of the leading Computing-related departments in the UK with a reputation for excellence in both teaching and research. The Department is part of the Faculty of Engineering and provides a wide variety of degree programmes for approximately 800 taught undergraduate and postgraduate students.

The post-holder will be responsible for planning and delivery of the Department’s activities in Outreach, Diversity and Public Engagement. In the area of outreach, this will include helping to attract the best students from all backgrounds to our taught and research degree programmes, maintaining our outreach activities with schools and the general public, and helping to engage and promote women and other underrepresented groups in computer science. The post holder will coordinate the Department’s equity, diversity, and culture activities, including managing and implementing our Athena Swan Silver Action Plan. The post-holder will also be a member of the teaching and research committees as appropriate.


To contribute to the planning, design and development of objectives and curricula in the areas of diversity, outreach, and public engagement.To run the Department’s ‘Communicating Computer Science in Schools’ programme, setting and assessing coursework, project work and examinations.To work collaboratively with the Department’s teaching and EdTech teams to plan and deliver courses and lectures related to diversity, public engagement, and outreach, as necessary.To be responsible for the ongoing development of a coordinated outreach programme in the Department.To collaborate with industry partners for the development of the Department’s outreach activities, including seeking industrial sponsorship to support such activities.To prepare and deliver activities and presentations aimed at introducing schoolchildren, teachers, and members of the public to Computing.To coordinate the activities of academics, research staff, students and external organisations engaged in outreach activities, such as public/industry engagement events, open days, school visits and taster days.To manage and coordinate the promotion of equity, diversity and inclusion in the Department, including co-chairing the Department’s Equity, Diversity and Culture Committee (EDCC) and relevant activities.To act as the Department’s Athena Swan coordinator, responsible for the management and implementation of the Athena SWAN Action Plan in the Department.To deliver annual Active Bystander and Unconscious Bias training to undergraduate and postgraduate students in the Department of Computing.To run the Department’s Year 10 and Year 12 Computing Taster Days (June and October).To organise room bookings, staffing, and catering for Outreach and Engagement events.To minute meetings and distribute meeting paperwork to staff and students, in a timely fashion.To book rooms for meetings (Equity, Diversity and Culture Committee, Athena Swan Committee, training for staff and students, , as necessary.To be an active member of relevant College, Faculty and Departmental committees, . teaching operations, industrial liaison, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Forum.

It is essential for you to have a degree in a STEM-related subject (or equivalent), knowledge of core Computing topics, outreach objectives and processes. 

You will also have excellent communication and organisational skills and proven ability to deliver technical lectures/presentations and develop related teaching materials to a high standard. More details in the attached Job Description.
