Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen to recruita Deputy Bed Manager to work within the Mental Health Inpatient Pathway Teamwith a particular interest in Older Adults.

We would welcome applications from MentalHealth Professionals with excellent negotiation, communication andorganisational skills. You will be assisting the patient flow between hospital& community teams using our resources efficiently whilst meeting the needs ofthe patients requiring our inpatient facilities.

The Pathway team, work across Adult &Older Adult, Inpatient Wards & Rehabilitation Units across Herefordshire& Worcestershire. The patient group for both counties is diverse andencompasses a broad spectrum of needs and illnesses.

In the absence of the Bed Manager there willbe an expectation to step up and manage patient flow for all inpatient units.

Main duties of the job

Support to ensure effective useof bed capacity, including assisting in the repatriation of Trust patients fromother areas and moving patient between different units. Liaising with SeniorManagers, Ward Managers, and urgent care services.

Communicate collaboratively,sensitively, empathetically and diffuse situations of conflict when tensionsarise around clinical priorities for admissions.

Utilise clinical expertise to direct movement/placement ofpatients where necessary for example, according to clinicaldependency/infection control requirements.

Contribute to the development of appropriate audits in relation tobed capacity and flow and the development of new processes.

Support bed manager to deliver training/awareness of CapacityManagement initiatives to Gatekeeping teams (Crisis, Home treatment, Mentalhealth Liaison and AMHP`s and ward clinicians).

Assist in the management of transportation of patients betweenunits and externally to include where specialist transport is required.

Job description

Job responsibilities

Actas a role model to colleagues, always seeking to maintain the highest standardsof professionalism.

Function as an active member of themulti-disciplinary team providing effective capacity management. Ensure highstandard of patient care, ensuring all patients individuality, dignity andprivacy are maintained at all times and that the philosophy of person-centredcare is upheld at all times.

Build and sustain effective relationships and communicationsystems across the health economy and be expected to offer clinical advice onany matters that are within their experience or clinical competence. Liaisedirectly with consultant Psychiatrists Inpatients & Home Treatment alongwith wider MH services to promote the effective and safe admission anddischarge of patients from the Hospital.

Use their initiative and take responsibility forthemselves and the quality of their work and the service they provide topatients.

Assist in maintaining an accurate bed state,including electronically disseminating as appropriate to On Call and seniormanagement. Participate in the regular timely reporting of capacity andresource utilisation to senior management and circulate, on a regular basis,the report for key clinical decision makers on resource utilisation.

Support teams in the allocation of beds for alladult mental health admissions across the Trust, ensuring safe and appropriatepatient placement liaising with ward managers, clinical leads and hometreatment.

Work alongside patient flow team to supportcapacity management within Herefordshire and Worcestershire Health and Care NHSTrust. The aim is to balance the access demands of the wards and those ofurgent/non-urgent need for available beds. This will include outsourcing bedsfor the Trust if demand exceeds capacity including specialist beds.

Be expected to utilise their clinical nursingexperience to support a safe patient admission by ensuring the appropriate bedfrom available bed stock is sought depending on the patients presenting needs,legal status, risk, complexity, gender, age and vulnerability.

Consult effectively with consultantpsychiatrists (RC), ward managers, care coordinators, clinical leads, AMHPs, CrisisTeams, and Home Treatment staff to monitor and assess the appropriateness ofadmission and the need for urgent beds to accommodate MHA sectioned patients.

Assist in the planning and coordination ofwinter and other bed management initiatives for the Trust.

Work closely with Crisis teams and Senior Nursesto ensure a seamless 24-hour bed management service.
