Job Purpose:

A vacancy currently exists for a Lead Operational Engineer to lead and manage their allocated operational team in all aspects of operational construction relating to the UK Power Network Services owned assets and associated infrastructure.

The Lead Operational Engineer will work closely with and support the Client Delivery Manager and other members of the UKPN Services Senior Management Team in the delivery of Business objectives and future new business identification and delivery.

Provide leadership and direction to the Operation Engineers, Apprentices and Contractors to undertake and complete the construction activities is a safe and effective manner, minimising disruption to the client’s electricity supply.

The Lead Operation Engineer will ensure delivery of Client focused construction projects, oversee management of substation and cabling construction as required on designated client’s private networks infrastructure as required. The position holder will work to ensure high standards of safety management throughout the team in all areas of their position’s responsibility in accordance with the UK Power Network Service Stay Safe directive.

Private HV Distribution Networks are of critical importance. Operating, maintaining and construction of the networks is a 24/7 job that requires the attention to detail, dedication and ultimately a great deal of cooperation across all disciplines (internal/external).

The role will require the individual to manage their team and undertake planning and delivery of new connection work, diversions, fault location and repair in addition to lifecycle replacement schemes and construction activities associated with electrical distribution equipment and infrastructure.

Principle accountabilities and duties:

Ensure high standards of safety management throughout all areas of responsibility. Delivery of construction programme within the UKPN Services owned and operated assets operating at voltages 11kV to 400v. Working with the Client Delivery Manager to ensure that all programmes of works are delivered to time and budget in line with contractual commitments to time, cost and quality. Assist in the management of budgets relating to the construction delivery and meet ongoing company objectives. Lead and motivate staff under their leadership to ensure that UKPN Services company ambitions are achieved especially in the areas of staff and client satisfaction. Ensure staff utilisation targets are met to maximise business productivity and profitability. Adherence to client and UKPN Services operations and procedures. Ensuring compliance wit CDM and UKPN Services Health and Safety polices. Developing site specification HS&E procedures. Compliance with UKPN Services Quality policies. Operate and update asset databases in respect to project objectives. Responsible for both reactive and planned construction works/activities. Carry out fault investigation and repairs where required. Modifying equipment and drawings to ensure the effective operation of the substations. Ensuring compliance with the DSRs (Distribution Safety Rules) during all activities. Active supervision of all contractors and staff working on site. Undertake additional activities commensurate with the job level and competency. Maintain and build strong business relationships with the clients engineering and project management teams and their appointed principal contractors/contractors. Seek opportunities to develop future business related to the HV clients and make recommendations to improve network reliance. Responsibility for delivery of all construction, maintenance and fault works to time, cost and quality. Ensure compliance with all policies and procedures and work to a high standard of quality. Daily planning, co-ordination and real time responsibility for the efficient utilisation of resources. Liaise with HV/LV control – submission of HV/LV switching schedules, complete HV/LV network operations in accordance to distribution safety rules and policies and procedures etc. Support and provide technical support to field staff. Obtain supplier quotations and raise purchase orders in accordance with finance, procurement and governance procedures. Change Management – ensure early warning notices are raised to the Project Management Team, Client Delivery Manager and Client. Provide technical support to the team. Deliver Team Briefings Identify potential risk and opportunities and raise awareness to the company and Client Delivery Manager. Proactively seek continuous improvement. Support the Client Delivery Manager in the delivery of the Client Development and Key Account Management Plan. Produce Risk Assessments and Method Statements for the safe delivery of projects work as and when required. Day to day management of operational team including the setting of IPRs, control overtime, and operational costs. Management of day to day activities of the operational team to ensure the successful completion of all engineering tasks. Working with the Client Delivery Manager to ensure all commercial, contract and financial aspects are complied with for the operational team. Working with the Client Delivery Manager to ensure sufficient resources are available in line with the agreed plans to complete all engineering activities in line with the client requirements. Complete quality assurance checks of works completed and take action to rectify any quality issues identified. To be prepared to assist other sections as and when required e.g. organisational changes, system emergencies etc as determined by your skills, knowledge and experience. Complete out of hours safety/emergency response (Standby) as and when required. Management/Supervision of contractors, carrying out high & low voltage maintenance activities. Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications and Experience: Senior Authorised Person as defined by the Distribution Safety Rules. Experience in distribution systems through the range 11kV to 400v. Educated to a minimum HNC level qualification in Electrical Engineering or equivalent. Knowledge and experience of distribution HV systems. Knowledge and experience of specialist HV equipment for the relevant client networks. High Level of Customer Focus, adds value to the customer and ensures the team completes all projects to customer expectations. Team Working, manages and integrates well in a team and actively promotes good team work. Excellent analytical, organisation & planning skills. Applicants must be able to achieve full Ministry of Defence Security Clearance. Ability to identify problems, understand key issues and investigate alternatives. Ability to read drawings and understand content. Excellent analytical, organisation and planning skills. Hold full driving licence. The individual will be required to work with minimal supervision to manage and prioritise a varied work load, and be an effective problem solver with the ability to communicate effectively with people at all levels. Ability to work as part of a team committed to the successful delivery of high- profile projects. Ability to use Microsoft Office suite, Outlook, MS Project and other bespoke software packages A good understanding of Health and Safety and Environmental Legislation, CDM standards and focussed on safe working. Initiative, acts in the interest of the company to develop the business to agreed objectives.

Health & Safety Responsibilities
