Requirements for this role:

A British Sign Language (BSL) Level 3 qualification or an equivalent to effectively communicate through BSL. A fullUK driving licence and business insurance and must be willingto drive your own vehicle (Mileage paid pence per mile). Experience in Care and/or being confident working in a lone working setting.

Job responsibilities

In this role you are afrontline worker supporting people with a rangeof acquired hearing and / or visionimpairment, in some services, the people you support will also have complex needs and learningdisabilities.

In different services you could be supporting children, adults or older adults,or possibly people from different age groups.

Our Communicator Guide services enable people to:

have choice and control over their lives

live as independently as possible and decrease isolation;

maximise opportunities to engage in practical, positive and stimulating activities and participate intheir local community

Youwill work in a particular service setting, of which more details will beprovided in a one-page service profile. In line with our commitment to supportpeople in the most flexibleand person centredway we can, you may be asked to work in different services orsettings in the future.

Purpose

The term Communicator Guide is used toemphasis the communication supportand escorting / guiding elements ofthe role and service. Communicator Guides act as the eyes and ears of theperson with sight and hearing loss and in some settings work on a one-to-onebasis. Communicator Guides are trained to support and facilitate communicationin different situations and provide support through communication, mobility andaccess to information / services to people with both sight and hearing difficulties. Communicator Guidesare impartial and give information rather than advice.

The main purpose of aCommunicator Guide is to supportpeople to be as involved as possiblein every part oftheir day to day livesso that they can be full and active members of society. Youwill work within the framework of the Sense I Statements to:

1.Keep the needs of the people you are supporting at the centreof your attention at alltimes;

2.Enable the people you support to influence their services and the way they are supported;

3.Help Sense to provide a high qualityservice.

4.Carrying out Communicator Guide specific responsibilities.

KeyResponsibilities 1.Keeping the needs of the peopleyou are supporting at the centre ofyour attention at all times. This means:

Listening and responding to people, using communication skillsto support them to understand

Supporting people to make sense of their environments and to access theircommunities.

Supporting people to learn new skills.

Supporting people with their healthand well-being.

Supporting people with their personalcare, if needed.

Supporting people with their behaviour, if needed.

Following any writtenplans and guidelines for each person.

Respecting peoples diversity, age,gender, ethnic origin, religious/cultural background, abilities/disabilities, and other needs.

2.Enablingthe people you support to influence their services and the way they are supported. This means:

Using this information to co-produce person-centred guidelines and plans,involving families, friends and other professionals if this is appropriate.

Providing opportunities to enable people to make choicesand decisions.

Supporting people to take partin the running of their own homes,if you work in a home environment.

Advocate on the behalf of and/or speak up for them.

Supporting people to keep in contactwith family and friends, and todevelop their social networks.

3.Helping Sense to providea high quality service by:

Keeping all records of your work up to date and accurate. Ensure critical information is passed to Supervisor as necessary

Completing Senses induction and skills development programme and attending courses arranged by your manager. Takingpart in supervision. Attending and contributing to meetings.

Behaving respectfully all the timeto the people you support, their families/friends, your colleagues, neighbours and members of thepublic.

Helping new colleagues to get to know the people they aresupporting and how to work in the service.

Keeping up to date with Sensespolicies and practices and followingthese at all times.

Keeping a safe, healthy andsupportive environment for the people you support, yourself, your colleagues, and anyone else coming into contact with Sense.

You may also be expected to carry out otherduties that are in line with the nature and grade of therole.

To contribute to the safeguardingof individuals in our care by adhering to our policies and procedures and ensuring that concernsare escalated to management.

4.Carrying out Communicator Guide responsibilities:

Provide practical help witheveryday tasks such as shopping or dealing with mail, assisting to improve ormaintain independence within the own home and community and may help peoplewith deafblindness to accessservices such as GP surgeries, shops and leisurefacilities.

May also do short term piecesof work to re-enable peopleafter loss of sight and/orhearing, so to develop a basic communication method, or to re-organise the hometo make it more accessible.

Demonstrate good practice to staff in residential and supporting living if the individual is moving to oneof those settings.

Communicator guides are assumed to work insituations with less accessible management supportand direction and to take greaterpersonal responsibility for an individual service than would be expected as alevel one support worker.

Support people with varyinglevels of complexcommunication or othersupport needs.

Guide and mentorother staff.

You may occasionally be required to carry out some work at evenings and weekends.

Communicator Guide training or the equivalent to be completedas agreed with Supervisor.

Caring/Support Worker experience in a personal/voluntary/professional capacity Experience of working independently as well as in a team setting Ability to support people with mobility ( assisting with walking, guiding or working with a person who is a wheelchair user) An ability to accompany/participate in leisure activities of the persons choice, for example collecting benefits, gym, swimming, accessing banks, attending groups, pubs, shopping, rallys, day trips etc To be able to travel from one place to another during working hours supporting the person/s (Communicator Guide Essential) Experience of keeping accurate records related to people being supported
