Job overview

Operating Department Practitioner or Anaesthetic nurse required for busy operating suite, undertaking both elective day case surgery and inpatient surgery together with emergency and trauma surgery. The successful candidate with be working with a dedicated team focused on giving the best care possible to all surgical patients.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Implement basic healthcare independently. Implement new/complex care with supervision. Practise in own clinical area of practice to agreed competency level. Ensure the use of safe techniques when moving and handling patients and equipment. Participate with the multi-disciplinary team in decision making regarding patient care. Accurately document and evaluate care. Work as anaesthetic practiioner in all surgical specialities within the department when allocated to s. Participate in shift pattern including weekdays, weekends, on calls and unsocial hours. Assist in other areas of the department as required within competencies. Work with nursing, ODP and medical colleagues to provide a safe environment for the patient undergoing day surgery procedures, including checking and maintenance of equipment. Participate in achieving, monitoring and maintaining set standards of care ensuring safe practice and reporting if these standards fall below an acceptable level. Assist in proposing and implementing change. Ensure that due regard is given to customs, values and beliefs of all patients. When assessed as competent be capable of taking charge of the specialist area. When assessed as competent give IV and Oral Medication. Be competent to manage a list from admission to discharge for any speciality within departmental guidelines.

Assist in the ordering of any specialist stock for your area

Ensure a high standard of clinical care to patients.

Keep patients involved in their treatment by providing information to patients. Identify any risks elements involved in the provision of health care. Update clinical skills so as to maintain professional development. Act responsibly in respect of colleague’s health, safety and welfare following safe work practices and complying with the Trust’s Health and Safety Policies. Utilise resources appropriately to ensure agreed standard of patient care Delegate suitable clinical care to junior staff. Develop preceptorship skills and actively support peers. Develop supervisory skills. Participate in the development of local nursing / policies and procedures.
