Job overview

The maternal medicine specialist midwife will:

Support the implementation of effective care pathways for pregnant women and birthing for those with complex medical conditions across the Maternal Medicine Network and London, with a key focus on addressing inequalities in all aspects of care.

Work with the lead maternal medicine midwife, obstetrician, and obstetric physician to provide a maternal Medicine Network within NCL.

Support the development and implementing of a shared vision for midwifery within the Maternal Medicine Network and delivering the Network objectives.

Provide and co-ordinate expert and high-quality professional advice from a midwifery perspective, to support and facilitate the delivery of high-quality maternal medicine services in line with the agreed shared priorities for the NCL Network.

Support co-production with service users in the planning and implementation of all services within the maternal medicine network.

Main duties of the job

Utilise the managerial structure and professional pathways within the Trust. Practise in a way that actively minimises dependency and promotes recovery of women. Communicate information in a way that makes it relevant and understandable for women and their families. Contribute to the development of standards for the maternal medicine service and maternity services strategy. Present findings at Women’s Health, North Central London Local Maternity System meetings. Work co-operatively with colleagues if the woman is transferred to them in order to minimise the disruption to the woman. Ensure a duty of care to patients. Take personal accountability for his/her own practice. Ensure that he/she remains professionally competent by participating in his/her own and others’ clinical supervision. Participate in the clinical incident reporting system Lead on developing policies, guidelines and protocols for the maternal medicine  Provide within the maternity unit a safe therapeutic environment that meets the needs of vulnerable women and their children. Be responsible for planning and coordinating own day-to-day. Have expert midwifery knowledge in midwifery.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Responsible for participation in the Trust appraisal process, and take a lead in identifying own mandatory professional, supervisory, personal development and training needs. Responsible for ensuring that the post holder accesses and participates in clinical supervision. Responsible for the safe custody and administration of medicines, where applicable. To participate and contribute appropriately in research, service modernisation and clinical governance. To ensure that the agreed philosophy approach is adopted and followed, whilst respecting and valuing the different therapeutic approaches available within the multi-disciplinary team. Responsible for ensuring confidentiality is maintained at all times in accordance with the General Data Protection Regulations (2018), Trust policy and good practice. Responsible for maintaining and conducting oneself in a professional manner towards women, their infants and family, carers, colleagues and other agencies. Participate in joint working with appropriate experts/agencies.
