Job Summary

An excellent opportunity has arisen for a 6-month fixed term post in Medical Microbiology/Virology at Great Ormond Street Hospital within the Molecular Pathology section to implement and develop a new diagnostic pathway in respiratory metagenomics.

The post will involve working at a Senior Clinical Fellow level within the department under the supervision of the Clinical Microbiology and Virology Consultants and Clinical Scientist team. The main purpose of this role is to provide clinical medical input to a new metagenomic service being developed at GOSH with important clinical liaison with paediatric intensive care departments, infection control, and the diagnostic laboratory.

The post is for 6 months commencing 1st September 2024 with the possibility of extension depending on further funding application.

Main duties of the job

This is a new fixed term post to provide clinical oversight and delivery of a new rapid respiratory metagenomic service to critical care at GOSH. The post-holder will be expected to provide clinical, antimicrobial stewardship, and infection control advice to paediatric patients on critical care units who have been tested for metagenomics on respiratory samples.

The Microbiology laboratory is located within the Department of Microbiology on the 4th Floor of the Camelia Botnar laboratories co-located with the microbiology and infection control offices. The post-holder will be expected to support the metagenomics service to provide clinical and technical laboratory liaison and therefore have significant experience in bacteriology, virology and molecular techniques. The post-holder will also get exposure to a wide range of laboratory techniques and therefore offers a range of experience to trainees in Infection specialties to the standard required for core and higher specialty infection training, relevant to Part 1 and 2 FRCPath examinations. There will also be the opportunity to participate in the wider Infection related activities including research projects, academic meetings, clinical meetings and microbiology laboratory learning opportunities.
