An opportunity has arisen for a 6-month (renewable by mutual agreement to 12 months) fixed term post in Medical Microbiology at UCLH.

The post will involve working at Senior Clinical Fellow (ST3+) level within the Department of Medical Microbiology under the supervision of Microbiology Consultants and Registrars. The Clinical Microbiology department provides a liaison to the diagnostic microbiology laboratory, while providing clinical teams in the various hospitals that make up UCLH NHS Foundation Trust with clinical advice and antimicrobial stewardship input. The department works with the teams in Infection Prevention and Control as well as Infectious Diseases and Virology to provide a comprehensive Infection Service.

This post would be ideal for someone who is looking to gain further experience in Clinical Microbiology with a view to pursuing specialty training in Infection or for a senior microbiologist looking for further experience.

The clinical fellow will undertake the role of the microbiology ‘specialty registrar’ and will participate in the work of the department in clinical liaison, laboratory and infection control, under supervision of the consultants. This includes authorisation (sign-out) of laboratory reports, dealing with telephone enquiries from clinicians and participating in ward rounds and multidisciplinary team meetings.

He/she will liaise closely with clinical colleagues concerning the diagnosis and management of patients, and prevention of infections.

Where appropriate, bench-work experience in all sections of the laboratory will be provided.

Clinical Microbiology is within the Infection Division is one of six Divisions within the Medicine Board. The Infection Division comprises the Hospital for Tropical Diseases, infectious diseases inpatient and outpatient activity including the OPAT clinic, Clinical Microbiology, Clinical Virology, Parasitology, the Department of Infection Prevention & Control, the Find & Treat service and NathNac. The Division works closely with the Pathology Division.

Within the Divisions of Infection and Pathology each discipline has a Clinical Lead. Clinical Leads provides professional leadership and are responsible for the service co-ordination and delivery of the clinical services across the trust. They are appointed by the Divisional Clinical Director of Pathology and the Medical Director of the Medicine Board and are accountable to the Divisional Clinical Director for professional issues, and the Divisional Manager for managerial issues.

The post holder will collaborate with clinical teams, other fellows, nurses, other clinical staff and laboratory biomedical scientists.
