Wakefield, United Kingdom Wakefield Council Full time

We are seeking Peer Support Workers to become a key part of our new Reconnect team. Peer Support Workers use their lived experience and knowledge acquired through their own experiences to provide information, support, and guidance to those experiencing similar circumstances. We are looking for peer support workers with direct lived experience of the criminal justice and prison system to work in the Reconnect team, primarily to support women on release from prison and use their own lived experience to guide them back into support services within the community.

What is Reconnect?

The Reconnect Service supports individuals leaving prison to access the services they need. Reconnect offers support and release planning for people for up to 12 weeks before they leave prison, ensuring a safe transition from prison healthcare to community healthcare and other support services. The service offers support for up to 6 months post release, or until all their support needs are met, and utilises Peer Support Workers who can use their lived experience to increase engagement.

What will I be doing?

Working face to face with women. Using your understanding and empathy to talk, listen, and connect with them and support their transition back into the community. Supporting women on release from prison who have anxieties around engaging with services and helping them to access care and support in the community. Acting as a role model utilising your own life experiences to facilitate engagement and recovery. Being creative in finding support networks for clients. Using your understanding of services to successfully identify the right support for the client and helping them access those services. Supporting women to identify and connect with groups, activities and programmes that may improve their health and wellbeing.

Essential requirements:

The successful candidate will need to have:

Direct lived experience of the criminal justice and / or prison system . An understanding of the issues faced by female prisoners being released, such as substance misuse, mental health, accommodation etc, together with an understanding of how these issues can successfully be addressed. A strong belief in the ability of people to turn their lives around. A flexible approach to working is required as the post holder may be required to work weekends on a planned basis. The post holder will also be required to work outside normal office hours. The successful candidate will be required to have an Enhanced DBS with barring list disclosure check prior to commencement in role. A previous conviction does not necessarily preclude employment.

What can I expect?

This is a full-time post of 37 hours per week. 28 days of Holidays plus 8 Bank Holidays. Support and ongoing training. Discounted and subsidised public transport (Arriva Bus Annual Travel Ticket, Northern Trains Limited (NTL), MetroCard) The Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS) Great range of benefits including discounted membership to our excellent leisure facilities with free 12 weeks exercise program with a dedicated personal trainer, discounts for a range of retail, entertainment, health and leisure providers, cycle to work scheme and many more.
