Job summary

Opportunities are available at The Royal Oldham Hospital for experienced doctors who can provide demonstrable expertise in intensive care in order to deliver a high quality independent service or manage complex cases.

The post holder will complement existing services through the provision of specialist knowledge & expertise in intensive care medicine .

The Royal Oldham Hospital currently has 22 critical care beds across 3 PODs, A, B, C, with 8, 10, 4 beds respectively. This is made up of 14 level 3 beds and 8 level 2 beds. The senior resident tier of medical staff is made up of ICM trainees, anaesthesia trainees and intensive care and anaesthesia specialty doctors. The junior tier is made up of a mixture of clinical fellows, ACCPs and internal medicine trainees.

Further expansion of critical care provision is planned in order to support the transfer of emergency and high-risk elective general surgery services to The Royal Oldham Hospital from elsewhere in the North East sector of Greater Manchester as part of the Healthier Together plan. To support this, there are advanced plans to build of a brand new state-of-the-art intensive care as part of a large investment which makes this a hugely exciting time to join this growing team and help shape the service.

The appointment is for two years fixed term with the potential for extension by mutual agreement.

Main duties of the job

Intensivists will spend all of their job planned clinical time in the intensive care unit.

The post holder must participate and promote activity to improve the quality and safety of patient care and clinical outcomes. The post holder must be able to formulate appropriate diagnostic and management plans, taking into account patient preferences.

You will supervise the work of junior colleagues and provide advice & support as necessary. It is expected that the post holder will understand the importance of raising via concerns through clinical governance systems.

Primary medical qualification (eg. MBChB) Minimum 4 years full time postgraduate training (or equivalent) gained on a part time or flexible basis, or as a Fixed Term Specialty Trainee; or shall have equivalent experience and competencies as a Fixed Term Specialty Trainee; at least two years should have been spent in intensive care (or anaesthesia with significant exposure to intensive care) Attainment or working toward MD in PHD or equivalent

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

Relevant specialty clinical knowledge & training as per The Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine or Royal College of Anaesthetists. Equivalent knowledge and experience in excess of basic level training in intensive care medicine. Ability to independently manage airways with drugs including management of the difficult airway. Experience of active involvement in Audit (clear description, outcomes & appropriate experience for level of application) Research experience: Evidence of relevant peer reviewed papers and other publications ( book chapter, book editor, case report - not abstracts or letters)
