Job summary

The Histology Laboratory and Mortuary services comprise the Cellular Pathology Department at the BWH site, under the Division of Medicine, Diagnostics & Therapies Clinical Group.

The department provides specialist gynaecological pathology services to the Birmingham Women's Hospital NHS Trust, which is a Cancer Unit, and to the Regional Gynaecological Cancer Centre at City Hospital, which is part of the Pan-Birmingham Cancer Network. The department also provides Perinatal Pathology and Placental Pathology services to BWH and other hospitals in the region and beyond.

We are looking to appoint an experienced Medical Secretary to work as part of a team delivering efficient, professional and effective secretarial and administrative support to a team of Consultant Histopathologists as well as Technical staff in the histopathology laboratory and mortuary.

It is essential that the post holder has a high standard of medical secretarial and computer skills, together with good communication and interpersonal skills. Additionally, you should be able to use your own initiative in prioritising work and meeting deadlines.

The successful candidate will have an AMSPAR Medical Secretary Diploma or RSA II Typing/Word Processing and Medical Terminology Diploma, a good standard of education and excellent keyboard and audio typing skills. Previous medical secretarial experience and knowledge of medical terminology is essential.

Main duties of the job

To provide secretarial, administrative, and IT support to the department of Cellular Pathology.

Assist the Cellular Pathology Office Manager and by working as a team to make sure there are no delays in the workflow and output of office work. Prioritising and problem solving where necessary.

Provide secretarial (PA) assistance to Consultant Gynae & Perinatal Histopathologists.

AMSPAR Medical Secretary Diploma or RSA II Typing/Word Processing and Medical Terminology

Knowledge and Nature of Experience

Essential

Accurate typing skills, audio, copy typing and good command of English language Extensive medical secretarial experience within a histopathology department Extensive knowledge of gynaecological and perinatal pathology medical terminology High level of competence in the use of (including data analysis) Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Access

Desirable

Knowledge of the UKAS accreditation process and ISO 15189 Standards

Analytical Skills and Professional Knowledge

Produce various data/statistic reports from computer system(s) upon request Able to plan, organise time / resources and assess priority Create, maintain and review office Standard Operating Procedures on i-Passport

Desirable
