Job summary

The successful candidate will be welcomed into a department with a current substantive consultant establishment of twenty-five. In addition, there are up to 20 Specialist / SAS / Clinical Fellow grade Anaesthetists.

We manage our service with open discussion, listening to and respecting everyone's views. The clinical speciality leads have responsibility to facilitate change and improvements in the service supported by the leadership team. We encourage everyone to be both leader and follower to help deliver improvements. Active participation in service development, departmental management, clinical governance & education is required.

The Anaesthetic Department is actively in the process of achieving National Accreditation with The Royal College of Anaesthetists, we expect this to be complete within the next 2 years.

In 2019 the department was shortlisted and received a high commendation at the BMJ awards for Perioperative Team of the Year. In 2018 & 2019 the department was shortlisted for HJS value & safety awards for various projects.

Main duties of the job

This post comprises of 10 PA's, which typically include direct clinical care of PA and supporting professional activity of PA. Additional SPA activity may be approved with mutual agreement for roles within the organisation.

The successful candidate will be contracted to Sherwood Forest Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust , based at King's Mill Hospital. A second hospital in Newark offers a variety of surgical / gynaecological and orthopaedic sessions and the appointee will be required to undertake elective theatre sessions as required.

All consultants are required to live within a reasonable distance of the Trust and be able to attend within thirty minutes when on call.

This is a full-time position but candidates wishing to work part-time or in a job-share are encouraged to apply. They will be required to devote substantially the whole of their time for the appointed sessions to the duties of the post and to give them priority at these times.

*There is possibility of locum consultant anaesthetist roles with on call activity being weekend trauma lists which run 8am to 2pm rather than the general on call rota.

Clinical duties

To assist in the provision and development of a safe, effective, and efficient anaesthetic service and support the Trust in its aim to provide the best possible care to patients. Out-of-hours responsibilities, including participation in the consultant on-call rota. To carry out all duties at the highest possible standard, and in accordance with current quality initiatives. Cover for colleagues' annual leave and other authorised absences. Any other duties that may reasonably be required from time to time. A willingness to undertake additional professional responsibilities at local, regional or national levels. To carry out his/her duties with due regard to the Trusts Equal Opportunities Policy at all times. To comply with Trust Health and Safety policies and maintain a safe and healthy environment for patients, visitors and staff. To have knowledge of and employ the basic principles of infection control practice and to ensure adherence to the requirements in the Infection Control Manual.

Teaching

To assist in the professional supervision and management of junior medical staff including the observance of local employment and human resource policies and procedures. To organise and participate in teaching, examination and accreditation duties for undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing medical education activity, locally and nationally. To participate in the education and teaching of other clinical staff.

Research & Audit

To be actively involved in participating in medical audit, the Trusts Clinical Governance processes and in continuing professional development. To implement audit and research findings as appropriate.

Policy & Planning

To contribute to the development of clinical and organisational protocols. To review and develop policies for clinical practice and effectiveness. To participate in the strategic planning for the service. To comply with current Trust policies and procedures.

Management and Communication

To participate in all aspects of the Service Line and Hospital affairs, including attendance at Consultant Meetings and to represent the department on appropriate committees/working parties when required. To assist in the effective handling of patient complaints.

Record Keeping

All staff who have access to or transfer data are responsible for that data and must respect confidentiality and comply with the requirement of the Data Protection Act 1998, in line with the Trusts policies. The post-holder is responsible for data quality and complying with the policies, procedures and accountability arrangements throughout the Trust for maintaining accuracy and probity in the recording of the Trusts activities. To comply with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 in line with Trust Policy.

Job Plan

A formal job plan will be agreed between the appointee and their Service Director, on behalf of the Medical Director as soon as possible after the commencement date of the appointee, as per the indicative job plan in section This will be signed by the Chief Executive and will be effective from the commencement date of the appointment.

The Job Plan will be reviewed annually, following an appraisal meeting. The job plan will be a prospective agreement that sets out a consultants duties, responsibilities and objectives for the coming year. It will cover all aspects of a consultants professional practice including clinical work, teaching, research, education and managerial responsibilities. It will provide a clear schedule of commitments, both internal and external. In addition, it will include personal objectives, including details of their link to wider service objectives, and details of the support required by the consultant to fulfil the job plan and the objectives.

Job Plan (10 PAs per week)

The appointee(s) will share responsibilities within the department of Anaesthesia. The appointee(s) will be required to provide a minimum PA per week of direct clinical care (DCC) which currently includes 1 PA for on call and for pre-operative assessment. Currently all consultants receive PA per week for continuing professional development. The majority of this work is expected to be done on-site. This balance may change depending on the agreed timetable and professional commitments, responsibilities and experience. Each theatre session is 5 hours which includes 1 hour for pre-operative assessment and post-operative care. The theatre start time for the morning list is 0900 and for afternoon list is 1400. We would expect at least one theatre session to be delivered flexibly.

The list of activities included in SPA is not limited to activities to support continuing medical education (CME), but includes mandatory training, appraisal, revalidation, audit, job planning, departmental and personal administration, governance, education and training etc. With time the nature and site of these duties (DCC and SPA) may change and will be reviewed annually as part of the job planning exercise.

The timetable outline below is for illustrative purposes only, the final job plan will be agreed by the Service Director with suitable candidates who have a specialist area of interest. Possible specialist areas of interest may include day-case anaesthesia, paediatric anaesthesia, obstetric anaesthesia or regional anaesthesia.

In order to support the Trusts objectives we anticipate that weekend trauma lists will be undertaken on a rota basis (we anticipate between 4 6 weekends per annum). The majority of Consultants work to an agreed annualised DCC activity target which allows a degree of flexibility for both the individual and the department.

Weekday on calls are currently fixed and occur before a non-clinical day, the day of on call will be agreed with the Service Director.
