Position Overview
The selected individual will join a well-established department comprising a total of twenty-five permanent consultants, alongside a team of up to twenty Specialist, SAS, and Clinical Fellow grade Anaesthetists.
Our department thrives on open communication, valuing and considering all perspectives. The clinical specialty leaders are tasked with driving enhancements and innovations within the service, supported by a dedicated leadership team. We promote a culture where every team member can take on leadership roles and contribute to service improvements. Active involvement in service development, departmental management, clinical governance, and educational initiatives is essential.
The Anaesthetic Department is currently pursuing National Accreditation with The Royal College of Anaesthetists, with an anticipated completion within the next two years.
In recent years, our department has received notable recognition, including a high commendation at the BMJ awards for Perioperative Team of the Year.
Key Responsibilities
This role encompasses 10 Programmed Activities (PAs), which typically include direct clinical care and supporting professional activities. Additional Supporting Professional Activities (SPAs) may be negotiated based on mutual agreement for roles within the organization.
The successful candidate will be contracted to Sherwood Forest Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, primarily based at a designated hospital. The role may also involve elective theatre sessions at an additional facility.
All consultants are expected to reside within a reasonable distance from the Trust and be available to respond within a specified timeframe when on call.
This is a full-time opportunity; however, candidates interested in part-time or job-share arrangements are encouraged to express their interest. Candidates will be expected to prioritize their appointed sessions during their working hours.
Core Duties:
- Upholding the highest clinical standards in patient management.
- Providing education and training to junior medical staff.
- Actively engaging in departmental and Trust-wide matters related to Clinical Governance and service development.
- Ensuring participation in ongoing medical education.
*There may be opportunities for locum consultant anaesthetist roles with on-call responsibilities, including weekend trauma lists.

Job Responsibilities
Clinical Duties:
- Contributing to the provision and enhancement of a safe, effective anaesthetic service.
- Participating in out-of-hours responsibilities, including the consultant on-call rota.

Teaching Responsibilities:
- Supervising and managing junior medical staff in accordance with local employment policies.

Research & Audit:
- Engaging in medical audits and the Trust's Clinical Governance processes.
- Implementing findings from audits and research as appropriate.
Policy & Planning:
- Contributing to the development of clinical and organizational protocols.
- Reviewing and enhancing policies for clinical practice.
- Participating in strategic planning for the service.
- Complying with current Trust policies and procedures.
Management and Communication:
- Participating in Service Line and Hospital affairs, including attending Consultant Meetings.
- Assisting in the effective management of patient complaints.
Record Keeping:
- Ensuring data confidentiality and compliance with the Data Protection Act.
- Maintaining data quality and adhering to Trust policies regarding record-keeping.
- Complying with the Freedom of Information Act as per Trust Policy.
Job Plan:
A formal job plan will be established between the appointee and their Service Director, outlining the consultant's duties, responsibilities, and objectives for the upcoming year. This plan will encompass all aspects of the consultant's professional practice, including clinical work, teaching, research, and managerial responsibilities.
The appointee will share responsibilities within the Anaesthesia department, providing a minimum of direct clinical care and participating in on-call duties as required. The final job plan will be tailored to the appointee's specialist interests and will be reviewed annually.
Person Specification
Management & Administrative Experience:
- Essential: Involvement in Quality Improvement projects and guideline development.
- Desirable: Completion of a Management Course and interest in patient safety.
Qualifications:
- Essential: Entry on GMC Specialist Register in Anaesthesia or equivalent experience, FRCA or equivalent, and full GMC registration.
- Desirable: Post-graduate degree.
Clinical Experience:
- Essential: Recent experience and technical skills relevant to the job plan, up-to-date Advanced Life Support certification, and completion of specialist training.
- Desirable: Advanced training or subspecialty interest.
Teaching:
- Essential: Evidence of organizing and delivering teaching at various levels.
- Desirable: Diploma in Medical Education.
Research & Audit:
- Desirable: Publications in peer-reviewed journals and participation in anaesthesia-related research.
