The Oak Centre for Children and Young People is one of the largest comprehensive children's cancer centres in Europe, and the principal treatment centre for all children with cancer in the South Thames area. It is also home to one of Europe's largest and leading drug development programmes in paediatric oncology. The number of Phase I and Il drug trials available for young people has increased from seven in 2009 to 23 in 2016. We also have one of the largest stem cell transplant services for patients with malignant disease in the UK.
The Children's and Young People's Unit at The Royal Marsden is fully integrated with all adult oncology specialities and enjoys the benefits of co-location with The Institute of Cancer Research (ICR) on our Sutton site.
The clinical oncology service for children and young people with malignancy has a significant international reputation and has an established record in innovative radiotherapy techniques.
The Children's and Young People's Unit has an excellent, well established paediatric oncology nursing service and there is excellent multidisciplinary care with well-developed integrated psychosocial, educational and family support.
The post will be based at the Royal Marsden Hospital, Sutton, and St George's Hospital.
Main duties of the job
This is a 10 PA Locum Paediatric Haemato-Oncology consultant position. The primary focus of the post will be on the delivery of the paediatric leukaemia and lymphoma service along with 6 other consultants with primary consultant responsibility for patients with leukaemia and lymphoma. Attending commitments will be for haematological malignancy at the Sutton site and for all paediatric oncology patients at the St Georges site. The post holder is also expected to have a minor role in the paediatric Haematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant (HSCT) service through inpatient and limited outpatient work and the diagnostic haematology laboratory service along with 3 other consultants who will retain primary consultant responsibility for allogeneic transplant recipients. The post holder will join the team of current substantive consultants based at The Royal Marsden, Sutton.
The post holder will attend:
Holistic MDT every Tuesdays (2 - 3pm) Weekly virtual ward rounds Fridays ( - during attending weeks Leukaemia MDT every Monday at the Royal Marsden (1 - 2pm) Weekly research meeting every Thursday (9 - AM) Weekly virtual paediatric solid tumour MDT every Thursday ( - 6pm) Weekly Altogether trial meetings every Monday (2-30-3pm) BMT meetings, currently Thursday alternate weeks ( - Consultant/Senior Staff meeting on Tuesdays ( - twice per month.

Job description
Job responsibilities
They will undertake an average of 2 clinics per week (see draft job plan) focusing on paediatric and adolescent leukaemia/lymphoma and LCH and occasional contribution to multi-disciplinary transplant patient follow up clinic for patients in these disease groups who are > 1 year post transplant with future opportunities to develop a off treatment leukaemia follow up clinic in association with CNS/ANP team.
They will be expected to undertake an average of laboratory reporting/MDT preparation sessions per week when resident at RM Sutton site for bone marrows, blood films and cytospins for patients at RM and for samples referred in from other hospitals. They will share responsibility with the other 3 FRCPath haematologists for the paediatric reporting on the Sutton site.
They will be expected to contribute to an area of management responsibility within the department
Clinical research activity will be encouraged with an active portfolio of clinical trials in leukaemia and transplant open within the paediatric drug development unit. In keeping with the clinical focus of the post being on the care of patients with acute leukaemia the successful applicant would be expected to develop an interest in leukaemia clinical trials and it is envisaged that they would support the currently recruiting ALL Together study as a sub-investigator within the paediatric department.
They will contribute to the Monday to Friday weekday attending Haem/BMT consultant rota at The Royal Marsden. During attending weeks they will lead the morning handover with the junior medical team and handover to on-call consultant colleagues before leaving the hospital in the evening.
The weekday attending responsibilities currently include care of all haematology and BMT inpatients under the paediatric team on the paediatric and teenage and young adult wards, supporting the management of patients in the shared care setting, seeing or triaging new referrals and being available for any acute problems in the daycare unit and paediatric procedures list needing consultant input.
They will also contribute to the Monday to Friday weekday attending consultant rota at St Georges Hospital. Responsibility at St Georges is for the care of oncology patients in up to four PTC beds, oncology care of patients in the paediatric intensive care unit, oncology care of patients under surgical and neurosurgical teams, seeing new patients referred directly to St Georges and consulting on potential new oncology patients within St Georges. The majority of PTC patients at St Georges have haematological malignancies and the post holder will be supported by consultant colleagues as appropriate in decision making for solid tumour patients at St Georges. There will be no fixed commitments at the Sutton site during St Georges attending weeks.
They will undertake a daily consultant-led ward round at St Georges during attending weeks and will work with the hospital specialist and the Advanced Nurse Practitioner team at St Georges to ensure high quality, safe care for all patients needing specialist oncology care. Shared care patients at St Georges are under the care of the general paediatricians but oncology consultants may be asked to provide advice or input for shared care patients at St Georges. They will contribute to the consultant out-of-hours on call rota (evenings/nights and weekends) covering oncology patients at both The Royal Marsden and St Georges Hospital.
They are expected to contribute to the supervision of non-consultant medical staff, the regular junior doctor teaching programme, departmental audit and the quarterly Care Quality Forum programme.
They are expected to develop excellent working relationships with the teams at St Georges Hospital including the consultant haematologists, the paediatric surgical team, Dr Assunta Albanese, Consultant Paediatric Endocrinologist, and other subspecialist teams including gastro-enterology and respiratory teams in order to facilitate the management of all patients under their care.
They will be asked to contribute to departmental organisational development as appropriate to the post and post holder.
Support and mentorship for the post holder will be provided by the Head of the Unit, (Dr Sucheta Vaidya) with any BMT mentorship and support provided by Dr Caroline Furness, lead for paediatric transplant.
