The Anaesthetic Department is actively in the process of achieving National Accreditation with The Royal College of Anaesthetists, we expect this to be complete within the next 2 years.

In 2019 the department was shortlisted and received a high commendation at the BMJ awards for Perioperative Team of the Year. In 2018 & 2019 the department was shortlisted for HJS value & safety awards for various projects.

This post comprises of 10 PA’s, which typically include direct clinical care of 8.5 PA and supporting professional activity of 1.5 PA. Additional SPA activity may be approved with mutual agreement for roles within the organisation.

All consultants are required to live within a reasonable distance of the Trust and be able to attend within thirty minutes when on call.

**Key tasks**:

- Maintenance of the highest clinical standards in the management of patients.
- Teaching and training of junior staff and medical
- Actively participate in both departmental and Trust matters concerning Clinical Governance, service development and general
- Responsibility for ensuring active participation in continuing medical education
- There is possibility of locum consultant anaesthetist roles with on call activity being weekend trauma lists which run 8am to 2pm rather than the general on call rota.

Clinical duties
1. To assist in the provision and development of a safe, effective, and efficient anaesthetic service and support the Trust in its aim to provide the best possible care to patients.
2. Out-of-hours responsibilities, including participation in the consultant on-call rota.
3. To carry out all duties at the highest possible standard, and in accordance with current quality initiatives.
4. Cover for colleagues' annual leave and other authorised absences.
5. Any other duties that may reasonably be required from time to time.
6. A willingness to undertake additional professional responsibilities at local, regional or national levels.
7. To carry out his/her duties with due regard to the Trust’s Equal Opportunities Policy at all times.
8. To comply with Trust Health and Safety policies and maintain a safe and healthy environment for patients, visitors and staff.
9. To have knowledge of and employ the basic principles of infection control practice and to ensure adherence to the requirements in the Infection Control Manual.

Teaching
- To assist in the professional supervision and management of junior medical staff including the observance of local employment and human resource policies and procedures.
- To organise and participate in teaching, examination and accreditation duties for undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing medical education activity, locally and nationally.
- To participate in the education and teaching of other clinical staff.

Research & Audit
- To be actively involved in participating in medical audit, the Trust’s Clinical Governance processes and in continuing professional development.
- To implement audit and research findings as appropriate.

Policy & Planning
- To contribute to the development of clinical and organisational protocols.
- To review and develop policies for clinical practice and effectiveness.
- To participate in the strategic planning for the service.
- To comply with current Trust policies and procedures.

Management and Communication
- To participate in all aspects of the Service Line and Hospital affairs, including attendance at Consultant Meetings and to represent the department on appropriate committees/working parties when required.
- To assist in the effective handling of patient complaints.

Record Keeping
- All staff who have access to or transfer data are responsible for that data and must respect confidentiality and
