Main duties of the job

Duties include leading and co-ordinating the colposcopy service at WAHT maintaining national standards for patient safety and clinical practice, including writing and reporting national reports.

Work with the Clinical Lead Colposcopist and wider team in colposcopy to support the development and delivery of the cervical screening service in accordance with NHS England Service specifications.

Responsible for the effective and efficient operational management of Specialist Gynaecology Outpatient department on a day-to-day basis.

Provide senior clinical leadership, expertise, advice, and support to the nursing and wider multi-professional team to facilitate the effective delivery of care to patients at all times.

The post holder must have extensive theoretical & practical experience of the clinical skills required to run independent nurse led clinics.

The post holder will provide clinical and professional advice at Directorate/ Divisional and Trust level.

Job Summary:

In collaboration with the Colposcopy Clinical Lead, to lead the delivery of the National Colposcopy Screening Programme (CSPL) as set out by Public Health England (PHE) (one half-day per week -1PA) and produce quarterly and annual performance reports.

To practice independently as a Nurse Colposcopist, accredited by the British Society for Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology (BSCCP).

To work closely with the specialty Clinical Lead and as part of the Directorate triumvirate to provide a safe, high-quality service with further service developments and collaboration with our Foundation group counterparts.

To work as an advanced practitioner and effectively lead and deliver an expert nursing service within the specialty areas.

To manage and develop the specialty nursing team acting as a professional leader to provide high quality care to patients accessing this service.

Job Purpose

The post holder will:

Be an integral member of the specialty team and the Directorate triumvirate to provide a safe, high-quality specialist service and contribute to the strategic review of clinical services as appropriate.

Be responsible for the management of all operational nursing issues within the specialty, overseeing quality, safety, equity, efficiency, and effectiveness.

Provide an overarching strategic leadership and co-ordination for the effective delivery of care for the specialty nurses using own clinical, managerial, and professional experience.

Provide patient-centred clinical care, encompassing advanced clinical skills within an agreed scope of practice, demonstrating the application of expert knowledge in the provision of evidence-based care.

Be responsible for the implementation of best practice, focusing on practice development within the context of a multidisciplinary team, thereby ensuring that the needs of patients are met.

Utilise clinical practice, consultation, research, and education to shape the strategic direction of the service.

To work in partnership with the senior nursing staff to provide clear leadership, set, monitor, and review quality and performance standards.

It is expected that the post holder will manage time effectively, creating a balance between clinic responsibilities and management responsibilities with effective job planning.

Key Responsibilities

Have an overall responsibility for the direction and development of specialty nursing services and lead a team of clinical nurses, offer clinical expertise, advice and clinical skill to ensure the smooth running of the department. This will include working as part of the team within clinical settings and managing on a daily basis.

As a lead CNS, accredited by the British Society for Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology (BSCCP) manage a caseload of patients delivering individualised direct patient care. Demonstrate safe decision-making and be able to institute appropriate and timely response to patient reported cues.

In conjunction with the Lead Colposcopy Consultant support the Colposcopy Quality Assurance Inspections.

In conjunction with the Lead Colposcopy Consultant take responsibility for the quality of care delivered to patients in line with national requirements and in support of the Clinical Governance agenda for the Trust.

To contribute to the development and expansion of the specialty services with management responsibility for additional team members.

Contribute towards directorate/divisional/corporate objectives, acting within local, Trust and statutory guidelines and policies at all times.

Excellent communication skills enabling maintenance of high quality service and ensuring timely management and resolution of unexpected events and situations.

Contribute to specialist forums and National initiatives, including collaboration with system partners.

Support patients, carers and staff during difficult situations arising in the clinical area, breaking bad news or following an unexpected event.

Provide reports to the relevant Boards and Governance forums timely.

Clinical LeadershipProvide clinical expertise, specialist advice and support to service users, ensuring that the provision of excellent evidence-based nursing care is maintained.

To lead the multidisciplinary team meeting by collating cases and ensure that the recommendations in relation to cases discussed are followed up and that accurate records are kept of the meetings.

Work in collaboration with the Lead Colposcopy Consultant and colposcopy co-ordinator and alert the screening commissioner, NHS England and Public Health England of any shortcoming that might compromise the ability of the colposcopy service to respond to issues in primary care.

Ensure adherence to national & regional fail-safe standards and processes and propose developments to local policies in conjunction with the cytology laboratory and system partners.

Develop clear lines of communication with Gynaecology/Oncology CNS and Gynae Oncology Team to provide specialist advice in the event of a cervical cancer diagnosis to patients, their families and carers until care is transferred to the oncology team.

Act as a resource to all members of the multi professional teams working within the specialty service and provide expert clinical advice and support on an ongoing basis to clinical nurses ensuring all aspects of the plan of care are understood and carried out in accordance with present standards and protocols.

To practice as an independent BSCCP accredited Nurse Colposcopist and provide specialist nursing advice and support to patients, their families and other healthcare professionals following diagnosis and through to treatment.

Visit wards and departments within the Trust where specialty patients are to support staff and patients and ensure high quality evidence based care.

Carry out investigations for patients following referral by consultants always acting within own professional scope of practice.

Support a patient caseload, ensuring continuity of a high standard of evidence-based nursing care, from point of referral through to conservative treatment and/or discharge and where appropriate independently prescribe necessary medications.

To ensure new recommendations and guidelines are adapted into clinical practice, in linewith current research, to ensure the best outcome for the patient.

Ensure holistic assessment of patients at the end of treatment and act appropriately on that assessment ensuring appropriate referral onwards and education/support to promote self-management.

Communicate information to patients/carers/relatives regarding treatment plan continually reviewing and assessing their understanding of the information provided.

Lead the day to day management of specialty services ensuring clinical sessions are covered by suitably qualified and experienced nurses.
