IT Disaster Recovery Engineer

The Role

We are looking for an IT Disaster Recovery Engineer in Group IT to lead and manage the Disaster Recovery (DR) operations within the Tech department. The IT DR Engineer will be responsible for ensuring that the DR testing schedule is aligned with the Operational Resiliency requirements and the IT service level agreements. The IT DR Engineer will co-ordinate, create and update the runbooks with each team, ensuring that they are consistent, accurate and comprehensive. The role will support the IT Operations team with oversight of the DRaaS provided by third party managed service partners and the running of resiliency solutions as they are developed. The IT DR Engineer will also advise on Azure Resiliency strategic and tactical solutions, working closely with the Azure Platform Engineers and Architects to design and implement resilient and recoverable cloud infrastructure.

The role is based in the Canopius Tech & Data hub in Manchester with occasional travel to the London office. Hybrid home working is supported.

Responsibilities will include:

Overseeing the DR testing schedule and ensuring that the DR tests are conducted regularly, effectively and in compliance with the IT policies and standards. Co-ordinating, creating and updating the runbooks for each IT team, ensuring that they cover all the necessary steps, roles and responsibilities for DR scenarios. Advising on Azure Resiliency strategic and tactical solutions, such as Azure Site Recovery, Azure Backup, Azure Availability Zones and Azure Availability Sets. Working with the Azure Platform Engineers and Architects to design and implement resilient and recoverable cloud infrastructure, following the best practices and principles of Infrastructure as Code (IaC), automation and DevOps. Providing guidance and support to the IT teams on DR planning, preparation and execution, ensuring that the DR objectives and metrics are met. Managing the DR documentation and reporting, ensuring that the DR plans, procedures and results are updated, reviewed and communicated to the relevant stakeholders. Identifying and managing the DR risks and issues, escalating them as appropriate and implementing mitigation actions. Keeping abreast of the latest trends and developments in DR and Azure Resiliency, and recommending improvements and enhancements to the DR strategy and processes.

Skills and experience:

Proven experience in leading and managing DR functions in a complex IT environment, preferably with Azure cloud infrastructure. Hands-on experience in co-ordinating, creating and updating runbooks for various IT teams and DR scenarios. Knowledge of Azure Resiliency solutions, such as Azure Site Recovery, Azure Backup, Azure Availability Zones and Azure Availability Sets. Excellent communication, collaboration and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to explain complex technical concepts to non-technical audiences. Excellent analytical, problem-solving and decision-making skills, with the ability to handle multiple tasks and priorities under pressure. Strong knowledge and understanding of DR, Azure and Security methodologies, frameworks and best practices, such as ISO 22301, ITIL, NIST and CBCI.
