Job summary
Undertake training within the clinical environment with the aim of becoming a fully accredited Clinical Perfusion Scientist. Post holders will attend a part-time/ block release programme over two years at Bristol University to obtain a MSc in Perfusion Science (more details available on the Bristol University website MSc Clinical Perfusion Science | Study at Bristol | University of Bristol). Work as part of the Perfusion team to ensure that the department meets its contractual and professional targets.
To be considered for this position you must have an upper second-class honours degree in a science or medicine-related subject, along with a commitment to good teamwork and personal professional development.
In addition, you should have good communication skills, a responsible, flexible, well-organised approach to work and enjoy working as part of a team.

Main duties of the job

Record keeping Audit Risk management strategies NHS Trust policies and procedures Departmental protocols Stock management and orderingThe department is involved in several new and progressive types of surgery including thru-port and minimal access valve surgery, alongside optimised conventional cardiopulmonary bypass. Research opportunities are available associated with these techniques.
Clinical training will be combined with academic study to attain a MSc in Perfusion Science. These studies will be facilitated by Bristol University and involve both direct tuition (block weeks at Bristol) and distance learning over a 2-year period.
Following successful completion of the MSc and 150 supervised clinical cases, you will be eligible to apply for and undertake a practical examination with the College of Clinical Perfusion Scientists. If you are successful in this exam you will become accredited by the Society of Clinical Perfusion Scientists and fully registered with the College.
About us
The Lancashire Cardiothoracic Centre is a purpose-built unit, which opened in 2005 within the grounds of Blackpool Victoria Hospital; now known as Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
The cardiothoracic multi-disciplinary team currently performs approximately 1000 adult cardiac procedures per annum and the perfusion team provides a wide range of services to cover these.
Hours are Flexible rota with on-call commitment once qualified.
The successful candidate will join a busy department of experienced staff who currently deliver an excellent standard of patient care and service.

Clinical Practice and Responsibilities for Patient Care
Become competent in setting up, priming, and running bypass equipment for cardiac surgery procedures, through training received from accredited perfusionists and the study of protocols, and work towards playing a full role in the routine cardiac surgery programme. Learn to assess the patient for relevant medical history, pathology and diagnosis and make appropriate clinical decisions concerning the conduct of the procedure , type of cannulation, size and type of equipment, type of priming solution. Administer drugs according to local policy and as necessitated by the clinical situation , priming solutions, anticoagulants, inhalational anaesthetic agents, potassium, and cardioplegic solution. Become conversant with specialist techniques and perfusion procedures as required by individual patients, such as left heart bypass, cerebral perfusion, vacuum assisted venous drainage, ventricular assist devices and blood conservation techniques. Assist surgical and cardiology staff in the insertion and management of intra-aortic balloon pumps as required by individual patients throughout the Trust. Maintain sensitivity and the dignity of patients in emergency situations and in the event of death during a procedure. Maintain up to date and accurate patient case notes in line with Society of Perfusionists of Great Britain and Ireland Standards of Practice and local Trust policies. Monitor and act upon a wealth of clinical information on a minute-to-minute basis, exercising sound and informed decision making regarding the constant well-being of the patient.Personal

Move heavy equipment between clinical areas, including transfer of patients on specialist devices between wards and clinical areas. Maintain intense levels of concentration in all aspects of patient management for prolonged periods of time; frequently up to 5 hours and occasionally for greater periods of time. Facilitate investigation into complaints, accidents / incidents relevant to the perfusion department, feeding back to the perfusion manager or risk management officer. Become familiar with areas of risk management, quality standards setting, and clinical effectiveness. Become aware of clinical governance and audit projects within area of clinical expertise. Take an interest in and support research projects in conjunction with the lead clinician for research and development in the directorate to promote perfusion research within the team. Advise mentor or line manager of any shortfall in stock levels and delivery of required disposable products, pharmacy and intra-venous fluids and take appropriate action as required.
