Main duties of the job

The Governance Manager will oversee the dailyoperations of our Governance Team, focusing on supporting the setup,administration, auditing and archiving of research projects. Yourresponsibilities will include maintaining compliance with regulatoryrequirements, managing risk, and facilitating the smooth execution of research admiistration.Collaborating closely with our R&I Manager, you will contribute to thedevelopment and implementation of research policies, ensuring alignment withorganisational and national standards. Additionally, you will work with datareports to optimise service efficiency, provide guidance to investigators, andmanage the Governance Team to deliver exceptional support services.

We provide hospital services from two acute sites - Darlington Memorial Hospital and University Hospital of North Durham. We have a centre for planned care in Bishop Auckland and provide care from community hospitals in Chester-le-Street, Shotley Bridge, Barnard Castle, Sedgefield and Weardale as well as over 80 other community based settings and providing care in patients' homes.

Job responsibilities

In this role, you will take the lead insupporting the setup and administration of research projects, ensuringadherence to regulatory standards and best practices. Your primary focus willbe on managing the Governance Team, overseeing daily operations, and fosteringa culture of excellence in research support services. You will collaborate withinternal and external stakeholders to streamline processes, identify areas forimprovement, and implement solutions to enhance service delivery. Additionally,you will work with data reports to monitor service performance, analyse trends,and make data-driven decisions to optimise service efficiency. Qualifications

Essential

A masters degree in a relevant field (, life sciences, healthcare management, research ethics) or equivalent, relevant experience. Training and experience in an appropriate field to postgraduate diploma level. Evidence of continuous professional development.

Special Skills and Knowledge

Essential

Strong understanding of research methodologies, data management, and ethical considerations. Knowledge of research governance principles, regulations, and guidelines within the NHS or relevant healthcare setting. Familiarity with relevant legislation, such as the Human Tissue Act, Data Protection Act, and Good Clinical Practice guidelines. Excellent communication skills, including being able to communication highly sensitive and complex issues to managers and staff. Ability to work collaboratively, methodically and flexibly to ensure that performance management targets are achieved.

Desirable

Possess highly developed, specialist knowledge related to research activity/research governance. Continuously updates specialist knowledge relating to research governance, ICH GCP guidance and UK directives. Knowledgeable of current, potential research and information relevant to the care of patients within specialist clinical areas and relevant to clinical trial participation. Excellent IT skills, ITQ/ECDL or knowledge through broad experience. In depth knowledge of NHS organisations and the challenges they face.

Experience

Essential

Extensive background in roles closely tied to research, innovation, or a pertinent scientific field, showcasing substantial expertise. Proven proficiency in research processes, governance, and regulatory compliance, demonstrating comprehensive understanding. Experience in managing research governance processes, including ethics submissions and approvals. Excellent organisational, communication, and leadership skills. Experience in project management and the ability to coordinate multiple projects simultaneously. Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team and engage with diverse stakeholders.

Desirable

Proficiency in using research governance management systems or software. Knowledge of research funding processes, grant applications, and financial oversight. Experience working in an NHS R&I department or a similar research environment would be advantageous.
