Oxford, United Kingdom Oxford City Council Full time

Job description

You can only apply for this role if you are currently working for Oxford City Council as an employee (including staff who are on secondment to another organisation) or Agency Worker subject to the Agency Workers Directive.

Oxford City Council is leading the City’s response to the Climate Emergency. Taking the lead from the City’s Climate Change Citizen Assembly the Council has adopted an ambitious but achievable net zero target. We are looking for a passionate, capable and dynamic NZ Delivery Project Officer to join our Environmental Sustainability team and play a leading role in making our net zero target happen.

Oxford City Council has been allocated funding under the UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF), part of the Government’s levelling up agenda. Our UKSPF Investment Plan includes an ambition to support the take-up of Green Skills training across the local economy. The UK Governments defines Green Skills as: “the knowledge, abilities, values and attitudes needed to live in, develop and support a society which reduces the impact of human activity on the environment”.

These skills are not yet widespread and awareness and take up of existing provision remains lower than needed to address the climate emergency. This role has been created to deliver on these ambitions, and will be key in helping to stimulate demand and shape the market for green skills training opportunities in the local economy, through delivery of two key workstreams:

Oversight and administration of a £60k Green Skills Bursary Fund - a flexible funding pot which organisations and individuals can apply for to achieve green skills outcomes (e.g. certifications and training).Delivery of Carbon Literacy Training programme - actively work to build low-carbon knowledge with council staff by delivering Carbon Literacy training within the council and to local partners.

You will manage and deliver these projects in collaboration with teams across the Council, alongside other UKSPF-sponsored investments in the Green Skills and employment referral pathways. Working collaboratively with colleagues and local partners to shape the local market, this work will provide an excellent opportunity for candidates wishing to build on knowledge and skills in net zero, green skills, partnership working and project management.

About The Carbon Literacy Project

Carbon Literacy learning and certification covers the essentials of climate change, carbon footprints, how an individual can ‘do their bit’, and why it is relevant from an individual to an organisational level. The officer will actively work to build low-carbon knowledge with council staff by delivering Carbon Literacy training within the council.

The Environmental Sustainability Team accelerates city-wide sustainability and is on the front line in responding to the Council’s declared Climate Emergency. This role requires commitment, focus and energy. If that sounds like you, we would like to hear from you.
