We're looking for someone with energy, drive and outstanding community engagement skills to work within our Patient Experience team as a Community Engagement Officer.

This is a demanding and busy role, requiring the successful candidate/s to have excellent written and verbal communication skills, outstanding presentation skills and an ability to develop and maintain successful partnerships with local voluntary sector groups, organisations and people. You will need to work flexibly across community settings and be able to evidence the impact of your work.

Main duties of the job

Build Strong Partnerships: Work closely with the voluntary sector to create and nurture partnerships that benefit our patients and the local community. Tackle Health Inequalities: Develop and implement initiatives aimed at reducing unfair health inequalities, aiming to ensure that everyone has access to the care they need. Support Patients and Local People: Be a key point of contact, providing essential support to patients and their families, and engaging with local people to understand and address their health needs.

Job responsibilities

The post holder will work with colleagues within the organisation to identify areas of pressure on George Eliot hospital services which can be addressed through working with volunteers, the voluntary sector, local people and local stakeholder groups to build stronger more resilient communities that place less pressure on the health and care system. The work of the Community Engagement Officers will align to the NHS England CORE20PLUS5 approach to tackling unfair health inequalities.

The role supports the development of the Patient Experience and Involvement strategy that aims to ensure patients and local people are at the heart of everything we do.

Person Specification

Qualification and Professional Training

Essential

Educated to degree level or equivalent experience in working with community groups or in a health/social care service.

Experience and Knowledge

Essential

Previous experience of working in a community or public / patient engagement role Understanding of unfair health inequalities and how they impact on health outcomes and an understanding of the NHS England CORE20PLUS5 approach to tackling health inequalities and why it is important. Experience in planning and implementing public involvement activity, and integrating involvement outputs into work programmes and campaigns Understanding of the media and how it can benefit community engagement

Desirable

Experience of working within the NHS, or local voluntary community sector organisation and an understanding of NHS structures and challenges.

Ability to develop and implement a local community/public engagement plan designed to address health inequalities. Experience of partnership working and working across organisations Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to communicate across a range of issues and to a variety of audiences Ability to build and maintain effective and collaborative working relationships with internal and external stakeholders at all levels A team player, with a flexible approach

Essential

Ability to build trust and credibility within local communities in order to build strong relationships and encourage community members to engage with NHS services. Ability to advocate effectively on behalf of vulnerable and marginalised communities ensuring their voices are heard and their needs are met within the healthcare system. Ability to encourage community participation and empower communities to take charge of their health by providing education, resources, and support tailored to their specific needs.
