The post holder will provide professional clinical leadership and expertise in enhanced care and management support for complex care post holder will line manage the antenatal and postnatal areas and will lead on ensuring staff are proficient in recognising, escalating and managing critical ill women and babies jointly with the a key member of the Senior Management Team you will be working closely with the MDT to maintain high standards of maternity care and implementing the JPUH Maternity Improvement post holder will be responsible for providing midwifery leadership to the clinical areas, which will include working clinically for up to 50% of the role and contributing to the operational management within will be responsible for ensuring the efficient and effective use of resources and the development & maintenance of the highest standards of care and efficient service role will include on call. This role is a rotational role and you may be asked to work or rotate in other areas/departments as per service needs.
Main duties of the job
To provide comprehensive management and expert opinion of the theatre and complex care within the services.-Developing care pathways with the MDT team for patients requiring enhanced care.-Line managing the antenatal, postnatal and infant feeding services.-Responsibility for the monitoring of the budget within the speciality-Having an integral role in supporting the department with the educational requirements for the staff within inpatient and outpatient settings around enhanced care and recognition of the deteriorating patients.-Be instrumental in developing learning opportunities and environments in the clinical practice environment.-Support team with expert enhanced maternal care (EMC) knowledge and skills and be willing to complete the EMC competencies/ advanced midwifery practice course (level negotiable, L7 supported).-Provide professional, clinical and managerial leadership to midwifery and associated staff.-Support transformation and quality improvement in the maternity services as part of the Maternity Improvement Plan and other national/regional drivers as required.-Act as Midwifery Lead for guidelines.-Act as Transitional Care Lead within the department and work closely with the neonatal team to comply with safety action 3 of the maternity incentive scheme.-Support the MDT in developing care plan for women requiring enhanced care or care outside guidance.-Deputise for the Head of Midwifery when/as required

Key Responsibilities -Provide clinical leadership in the inpatient areas, sets the standards of care and promote evidence-based practise within the clinical setting.-Having an integral role in supporting the department with the educational requirements for the staff with regard to enhanced care-Line manager for antenatal, postnatal and infant feeding team.-Ensuring that all staff have the appropriate competencies in recognition of the deteriorating patients and enhanced care.-Lead supervisor role for the speciality.-Has 24-hour responsibility for the organisation of care provided, duty rota's ensuring skill mix and reallocating staff as required-Be instrumental in developing learning opportunities and environments in the clinical practice environment and maintain communication networks.-To hold overall responsibility for the development and co-ordination of the theatre activity and the lists, including Managing the floor.-To promote and maintain effective communication and work in partnership with the multidisciplinary team.-To provide effective leadership to the department.-To develop the guidelines and competencies for the department and act as midwifery guidelines lead.-Representing the directorate at senior meetings.-Deputise for the Head of Midwifery when/as required.-Work towards implementing advanced midwifery practice at JPUH.
Clinical and Operational Responsibilities -Ensuring appropriate lines of communication are maintained between all grades of staff.-Liaise with the multidisciplinary groups and other directorates in relation to patient care and service.-Promote leadership and good communication skills-Coordinate the provision of care for women with complex needs such as requiring enhanced care.-Ensure duty rotas have desired skill mix and ensure relocating staff as required.-Provide specialist knowledge to all grades of staff.-Be the midwifery guideline lead for maternity services-Undertake preceptorship and mentoring skills.-Carry out yearly staff appraisals-Initiating and participating in changes to practice.-Lead on the design of audit tools to measure standards of care including surgical site infection-Identify deficiencies in skills within the team and arrange training as necessary-Identify the educational needs of staff with the speciality.-Participate, organise and initiate training and workshops. Arrange outside speakers and practical demonstrations to ensure continual training is given.-Contributes to the development and maintenance of a positive learning environment for colleagues.
Developing Practice and services transformation -Ensure that the environment is safe for all users and reports hazards in accordance with the trust policy.-Overseeing the coordination of t the unit and ensure efficient and effective use of resources.-Lead on quality improvement and cost improvement initiatives within the surgery Division.-Budget holder responsibility for the allocated areas-Initiate changes to ensure that the budget remains within set parameters-Lead on the recruitment and selection of staff.-Lead on the business planning and continuity development for this department-Lead jointly with the SMT on a succession planning programme-Work closely with the Infection prevention and control (IPC) and reduction of healthcare associated infections (HCAI) -Create an environment and culture in which infection prevention and control is intrinsic to care delivery by setting and monitoring environmental standards and take action to ensure compliance to cleaning audits and PLACE inspection specifications are met.-To ensure all staff understand their role and contribution to patient safety in relation to infection prevention and control and have the knowledge and competencies to provide optimal care by utilising staff appraisals, objective setting, link midwives and champions to promote best practice and monitorcompliance.-Ensure IPC and HCAI surveillance, audit and RCA data are analysed and utilised to inform priorities, actions and interventions to reduce infection.-must be aware of the responsibilities placed upon them by The Health Act (2007) to ensure they maintain a safe, infection free environment. This includes the knowledge and understanding of the management of infected patients and the principles of Standard Infection Control Precautionsincluding the correct technique for Hand Washing and the appropriate use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
Analysis, Planning & Organisational -Develop and sustain appropriate relationships, partnerships and networks to influence and improve health outcomes.-With due regard to risk management policies and procedures, ensure that risk and safety assessments are carried out within sphere of responsibility and monitor the action plans.-Be aware of the potential for vulnerability and abuse amongst service users and their families /carers and ensure all staff adheres to the local policy to inform appropriate personnel in line withSafeguarding Children / Safeguarding Vulnerable Adults and Trust policies.-Be available for advice and support for all junior members of the clinical teams, to ensure that theydevelop in line with expectation. Support staff to complete the Trust competencies and work within a quality and evidence based method.-Investigate serious incidents and make judgements and recommendations about outcomes, implications and action plans.-Lead on the development and implementation of clinical pathways as appropriate.-Identify, analyse, action and discuss with Head of Midwifery/Deputy as appropriate any change management issues that arise.-Appraise and assess measures used to prevent infection control hazards, taking into account the individual midwifery/nursing, social, physical and psychological needs of the service-user.-Play a supporting role in assisting all staff members to improve clinical pathways through the organisation.-Lead on monitor quality and safety metrics and evaluating the effectiveness of clinical interventions within areas of responsibility.
EDUCATION, RESEARCH & PRACTICE DEVELOPMENT -Create a learning environment conducive to all staff acquiring the required knowledge and skills to meet the needs of women and their families.-As a member of the midwifery management team, review and influence the development and implementation of policies based on local and national agendas.-Support newly qualified/appointed midwives and in becoming confident and competent practitioners.-Identify areas of practice requiring development, and prioritise, develop and implement changes in liaison with the Education and Practice Development team.-Develop innovative ways of sharing own and others expertise and experience to make effective use of learning opportunities.-Support the Division in leading clinical audit programmes to improve the service.
