Job summary

The Morecambe Bay Respiratory Network in conjunction with the Community Respiratory Service, have secured funding until April 2026, to trial a number of new services across Morecambe Bay, including (but not limited to) integrated MDT clinical pathways for chronic respiratory disease management, additional localised pulmonary rehabilitation programs, and specialist home rehabilitation and support, for people with respiratory disease living with high symptom burden who are at high risk of deterioration and urgent care use.

This role offers you a permanent contract with our Trust (UHMBT), and a role aligned with the Community Respiratory Service until 31st March 2026. Further funding for us to continue these Respiratory services beyond April 2026, will be dependent on the success of this trial period.

The roles of the Respiratory Physiotherapists will specifically support our delivery of 4 new local Pulmonary Rehabilitation following programmes across South Cumbria working closely with our GP practice partners to improve access and uptake ofPR. The Physiotherapist role will also support the cross-bay provision of early PR (delivered in the home setting).

Main duties of the job

As one of two a Respiratory Physiotherapists working on our new Pulmonary rehabilitation programmes, you will provide care in the group setting, in collaboration with our Nurse, OT and support staff.

As a Respiratory Physiotherapist supporting the 'Respiratory Rehab at Home' service, you will work alongside ACP, Physio, and Nursing staff to provide direct specialist clinical care to people with severe, complex and debilitating chronic respiratory disease, in the home setting, across the whole of Morecambe Bay, providing early access to Pulmonary rehabilitation, following an acute exacerbation of chronic lung disease, to improve condition management, health outcomes and reduce further UEC usage.

Both roles require you to contribute to the National PR Audit (NRAP) and PR service accreditation scheme (PRSAS).

About us

UHMBT Integrated Community Service provides care outside of the hospital setting, including community locations and people's own homes.

Our Hospital services operate from three main hospitals-Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, as well as a number of community healthcare premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, and Ulverston Community Health Centre.

Our Trust's Integrated Community Care Group provide a large number of out of hospital services in community settings, including the patient's home.

FGH and the RLI have a range of General Hospital services, with full Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care units and various Consultant-led services.

WGH provides a range of General Hospital services, together with an Urgent Treatment Centre, that can help with a range of non-life threatening conditions such as broken bones and minor illnesses.

All three main hospitals provide a range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies,daycase and inpatient surgery. In addition, a range of local outreach services and diagnostics are provided from community facilities across Morecambe Bay.

Job responsibilities

As a Respiratory Physiotherapist, you will undertake comprehensive holistic assessments, including Respiratory full history taking, clinical examination, special testing (inc. exercise testing) and evaluation of clinical outcomes.

You will utilise your knowledge of rehabilitation, respiratory and chronic disease to create individually tailored programmes of exercise, and/or symptom management therapies, along side a behaviour change approach to self management, all to improve the quality of life and independence of people with chronic lung disease.

Qualifications

Essential

Physiotherapy degree [or equivalent] Registered with HCPC Evidence of relevant post graduate specialist clinical education in either Respiratory or Pulmonary Rehabilitation
