About the role

An exciting opportunity has become available at the Pathology Translational Technology Platform (TTP) for a Histology Technician who will enhance the research capacity of the Cancer Institute by providing technical support to its researchers. The successful applicant will join a small team of research technicians responsible for the delivery and optimisation of histology services such as tissue processing and embedding, sectioning, staining, slide scanning and the building of tissue micro-arrays in a timely and efficient manner. The Pathology TTP is also looking to introduce a molecular pathology service, including immunohistochemistry (IHC), nucleic acid extraction and spatial transcriptomics. We are looking to recruit an enthusiastic individual with broad laboratory experience, who is committed to providing a high-quality histology service to our users and who enjoys working as part of a busy team.

The role will provide opportunities to gain valuable laboratory management experience and interact with a wide range of researchers (students, post-docs, clinicians and basic scientists) while supporting projects across UCL. The successful candidate will be line managed by the Pathology TTP Manager and collaborate closely with the UCL/UCLH Biobank for Health and Disease, and the UCL/UCLH Cancer Biomarker Centre. This vacancy would particularly suit candidates aiming to pursue career in biomedical science or translational research, and who enjoy getting involved in all aspects of laboratory operations. Full training will be provided and for all components of the job in which the candidate does not have experience.

The position is funded full-time until March in the first instance. The post holder would be required to start at the earliest opportunity and work on-site during the facility opening hours of 9am-5pm Mon-Friday (excluding Bank Holidays). The successful candidate must be willing to be vaccinated against Hepatitis B. Interviews will take place in person in October at the UCL Cancer Institute in London.

The position will be recruited at Grade 5 or Grade 6, depending on technical histology experience.

About you

The successful candidate should have experience of, or willingness to develop their laboratory skills in microtomy and cryotomy of human and animal samples.

They must have a BSc in Biomedical Science or equivalent, great attention to detail and experience in managing data by using Excel spreadsheets and databases.

Excellent communication and organisation skills are required. An MSc in Biomedical Science or equivalent is desirable but not essential.
