Job summary

The Specialist Team for Early Psychosis (STEP) is lookingfor a qualified member of staff to join this busy team. This post will mainly cover the Teignbridge part of the locality area of Torbay, South and West Devon. We are looking for someonewith a good understanding of psychosis and the challenges it presents in earlyonset. An understanding of the possible impact of psychosis and antipsychoticmedication on physical health and the interventions to minimize this would alsobe desirable.

STEP provides a service for people between the ages of 14 -65 who are experiencing a First Episode of Psychosis (FEP). This includes aprolonged assessment period for up to 3 months where a number of specialisttools are used. Those cases confirmed as having a psychosis are taken on forintensive Key-working for a period of up to 3 years. During this time weconduct physical health checks, together with family and other psychosocial interventions. Wehave a Multi-disciplined team with dedicated specialist in social care,employment, psychological interventions and prescribing.

This role will include assessing, care co-ordination anddelivering interventions.

Main duties of the job

The role will include:

Providing complex assessment and care planning forindividuals and their families/carers experiencing first episode psychosis.

Working as part of a multidisciplinary team.

Engage service users and carers assertively in thecommunity.

To develop and maintain therapeutic relationships withservice users and their families and carers and other services to preventhospital admission.

Deliver NICE concordant interventions, including Family orsystemic work.

To offer proactive risk management approaches to help theservice user and their family to reduce disabling effects of psychosis andenable full and sustained recovery

Provide psycho-education regarding first episode psychosisto service users and families.

Ensure basic needs are addressed housing, income,support in accessing education/training etc.

Provide interventions and work with otherdisciplines/agencies/teams in the care of service users experiencing co-morbidproblems with substance use/misuse.

Engage the service user and their family in relapseprevention and crisis planning and provide and coordinate interventions thatmaximise the service users' ability to resolve crises, remain at home and avoidthe need for hospitalisation.

To support medication concordance.

Ensure timely and accurate documentation.

Practice in a was that minimizes dependence and promotesrecovery

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

An appropriate up to date professional mental health qualification, eg RMN, OT or social worker, on the appropriate professional body register and hold current registration with no restrictions. Evidence of relevant continuing professional development.

Desirable

Training to level 2 in Safeguarding children and young people: roles and competencies for Health Care staff. Post registration training in relevant field. Mentorship (Student Supervisor) training.

Experience

Essential

Substantial experience working within a mental health setting. Managing a caseload of clients with a range of mental health problems.

Desirable

Demonstrates sound theoretical knowledge of mental health practice. Working within a community mental health setting. Providing clinical supervision. Experience of working in a multi-disciplinary and multi-agency environment.

Knowledge and skills

Essential

Ability to be mobile across a geographical area. Ability to work independently and part of a team. Excellent communication skills including the ability to engage with clients experiencing a wide range of mental health problems. Ability to communicate with a wide range of professionals from various settings.
