Job overview

We are looking for Specialist Occupational Therapist to work in our innovative and rapidly expanding Cancer Prehabilitation and Rehabilitation service.

The successful candidate will join the clinical team of the Active Together service in Sheffield Teaching Hospitals, delivering multimodal prehabilitation and rehabilitation to patients receiving cancer treatment. They will support to team in expanding the service to include additional tumour groups, and to continue to develop and improve the existing service.

This vacancy is advertised on a fixed term contract basis for a period of 18 months up to the end March 2026 due to the post being externally funded. The fixed term contract status of the post holder will be reviewed in accordance with the Trusts legal obligations regarding fixed term contracts taking into consideration the ongoing source of the external funding and the requirement for the post to be maintained.

Main duties of the job

• To assess, plan and deliver Occupational Therapy interventions for patients undergoing cancer treatment and participating in the Active Together Prehabilitation and Rehabilitation programme, including fatigue management, well-being support and vocational rehabilitation in group or 1 to 1 settings.

• To support patients by promoting healthy living and behaviour change.

• To support, supervise and train assistants, students, less experienced staff and other Active Together team members within the service.

• To deputise for the B7 Clinical Lead when necessary.

• Adopt a personalised care approach to management of patients, including an understanding of behaviour change approaches and “what matters to you”.

• Contribute to the evaluation of the service against Key Performance Indicators for feedback to Yorkshire Cancer Research

• Contribute to the operational management and continuous improvement of Active Together Sheffield.

• Place the need to address health inequalities within Active Together as a priority in patient care and service development.

• To perform holistic assessments and use Active Together screening tools to identify physical, dietetic and psychological needs in patients and arrange appropriate onward care.

• To contribute to the development of Active Together across South Yorkshire by being involved in service development and liaising with wider team member when required.

Working for our organisation

This roles sits within the Active Together Sheffield service.

Active Together is a prehabilitation and rehabilitation service supporting people following a cancer diagnosis with physical activity, nutrition, and wellbeing guidance. The service has been designed by Sheffield Hallam University who work in close collaboration with NHS teams to support the delivery and evaluation of the service.

The Active Together service launched in Sheffield in 2022 and this year will expand to new sites across South Yorkshire in Barnsley, Rotherham and Doncaster. Active Together South Yorkshire will provide equitable, multi-modal and personalised prehabilitation and rehabilitation support that meets the needs of patients across the region and generates evidence for a commissioned service. This is an exciting opportunity to develop and deliver prehabilitation and rehabilitation pathways and help thousands of patients across South Yorkshire.

Active Together is funded by Yorkshire Cancer Research, Yorkshires independent cancer charity, working so more people can live longer, healthier lives, free from cancer.

Education, Qualifications and Memberships

Essential criteria

• Diploma/Degree in Occupational Therapy

• Current HCPC registration

• Demonstrate commitment to Continuous Professional Development via personal development plans/file

• Training from a recognised provider for undergraduate Occupational Therapy student supervision

• Evidence of relevant post graduate development of knowledge and skills in rehabilitation or oncology.

• Evidence of relevant post graduate development in rehabilitation, or oncology.

Desirable criteria

• Member of Royal College of Occupational Therapy

• Member of cancer-related professional special interest group

Experience

Essential criteria

• Completion of post-registration roles in a range of clinical areas including surgical and medical care

• Experience of supervising, managing and developing more junior staff through supervision and appraisal.

• Experience of assessment, problem identification and treatment of patients with cancer.

• Experience of working with patients with mental health problems, or of supporting patients in managing their mental wellbeing

• Experience of managing the care of patients experiencing fatigue

• Experience of supporting patients with vocational rehabilitation

• Supervision & support of students.

• Involvement in service development

• Involvement in audit

Desirable criteria

• Experience in delivering community-based rehabilitation

• Involvement in research

• Experience in delivering cardiac, pulmonary or cancer rehabilitation

• Experience of delivering group education sessions for patients and their relatives

Skills and Knowledge

Essential criteria

• Demonstrates a clear understanding of current National policies & priorities in Cancer Care services within the NHS

• Demonstrates knowledge of cancer care pathway within the NHS

• Knowledge of the evidence base and guidance relative to the clinical area

• Ability to work independently as an autonomous practitioner

• Demonstrates evidence of leadership experience

• Excellent organisational and time management skills to manage a demanding workload and priorities effectively, for yourself and supervised staff

• Experience of leading in-service training and the ability to pass on knowledge in a formal and informal setting.

• Ability to reflect and critically appraise own performance

• To have developed coping strategies to deal with the emotional nature of the work

• Basic IT skills and able to maintain accurate written records using IT systems.

• Experience of working collaboratively as part of an interdisciplinary team, delivering multi-modal prehabilitation and rehabilitation
