Brain Research UK funds world class research to better understand, develop new treatments and works towards prevention of brain conditions that still devastate too many lives.

We receive no government funding and it is only thanks to the generosity of our supporters that vital life changing, life-saving neurological research can be funded, to help people live better, longer.

Founded in 1971, we are a well-established charity with a new fundraising strategy to help accelerate the progress of neurological research. As a small and growing charity, we are seeking someone who is keen to join a committed team and develop their skills and career within a vibrant and positive organisation.


The Role

The role has a large amount of project management responsibility and the opportunity to shape challenge events and community fundraising strategy. This role will suit someone who can roll their sleeves up and get the job done, as well as someone looking to take on a more strategic and project management role to broaden our reach and supporter engagement.

Working alongside the Director of Fundraising, you will play a crucial role by providing the highest levels of fundraising and stewardship to ensure the provision of seamless, excellent supporter care and assistance to our supporters. The two key areas of responsibility (but not limited to) are Community Fundraising (in its relative infancy at the charity and needing someone with experience and vision to broaden our reach and grow current income of c£100k per annum) and Challenge Events Fundraising (where we are looking to grow an already successful events calendar generating over £1m annually). Our current key fundraising event is the London Marathon; the 2024 LM campaign generated income of just of £1m.

The successful candidate will need to be a good team player, flexible, hardworking and prepared to play an enthusiastic role in helping the team to deliver an excellent supporter experience and focused on increasing fundraising income. The role currently has one direct report, an officer, and It is envisaged that the role will develop in line with increased success and revenue generation.


Responsibilities

Challenge Events

  • To project manage our participation in third party events such as the London Marathon, including organising recruitment, cultivation, training days and race week events. The London Marathon is our single most successful event, with a current team of c300 runners.
  • To project manage the relationship with likeminded charities and find ways to build on our existing inter-charity partnerships
  • To engage with our supporters and provide excellent supporter care, providing them with everything they need to make their support a success
  • To liaise with event organisers and suppliers
  • To proactively seek opportunities to attract participants and generate income
  • To provide comprehensive administrative support for this area of fundraising, including using Excel and Donorfy to manage participation, engagement and income.


Community Fundraising

  • To project manage our small but growing Community Fundraising activity
  • To proactively seek opportunities to attract new fundraisers through community fundraising events/campaigns etc.
  • To provide comprehensive administrative support for this area of fundraising, including using Donorfy to manage engagement and income.


Other duties

  • To develop an in-depth knowledge of our work so you can speak with confidence to our supporters about how funds are used
  • Maintain and develop supporter journeys to maximise scope for repeat support and optimise overall lifetime value
  • To be an in-house leader in using our CRM effectively (Donorfy)
  • To work with the Director of Fundraising to find opportunities for growing income, buy into the charity’s test and learn culture and bring new ideas for discussion and testing
  • To support all fundraising and charitable activities across the organisation as required
  • Other administrative tasks as required


Person specification

Experience

We are looking for a candidate from a Challenge Events background who is looking to make the next step in their career and take on more responsibility.

  • Experience of working with and developing relationships with individual fundraisers
  • Experience of developing and delivering robust stewardship with active fundraisers
  • Experience of working on third party challenge events, in particular the London Marathon
  • Using social media to communicate with charity supporters
  • Experience of community fundraising
  • Experience of offering excellent fundraising assistance to charity supporters


Skills

It is essential that you have the following skills:

  • Excellent interpersonal and verbal communication skills and excellent written skills including strong copy writing skills
  • Budgeting experience, directly or indirectly, to include income and expenditure
  • Supporter care – must be able to provide our supporters and the general public with excellent customer service both written and over the phone
  • Time management – ability to work under pressure, plan and prioritise work effectively and meet deadlines
  • Attention to detail – you must be able to consistently produce accurate work
  • CRM – previous experience using a CRM, or other database
  • IT literacy – you must be proficient in Word, Excel, Outlook and, ideally, PowerPoint
  • Social media – able to use social media to thank and communicate with supporters


Knowledge

  • Knowledge of London Marathon charity programme
  • Knowledge of Community Fundraising income generation
  • Knowledge and understanding of the charity sector and relevant fundraising codes of practice
  • Knowledge of digital fundraising is desirable
