The Sheffield Teaching Hospitals Podiatry Service is composed of three Teams: Empowerment (Triage and First Contact), Community Podiatry (Foot Protection Service, At-Risk Foot Team, Nail Surgery Team, Rheumatology Podiatry) and the Acute Team (Diabetic Foot Multidisciplinary Team, Vascular Podiatry, Renal Podiatry, F-Scan and Offloading Clinics). You will get the opportunity to continually develop your skills.

You will support the Podiatry Service to maintain its Customer Service Excellence award which the Service has held for 28-years and actively promote the Trust PROUD values.

Applicants must self-motivated as well as having the necessary experience, knowledge and skills to contribute to the collaborative planning and provision of care undertaken by the foot protection team and the hospital team.

The Podiatry Service participates in the Customer Service Excellence Award, to ensure that patients receive a high standard of patient focussed care to meet their needs and has a culture of continuous development through research audit and service improvement.

Main duties of the job

The postholder will contribute to the development and delivery of care-plans for patients with, or at extreme risk of, active foot disease. This care will be provided in in-patient, out-patient and community settings, on behalf of the Consultant led multi-disciplinary team.

The role requires excellent teamworking to be an effective member of the foot protection team, working collaboratively with:

• Community / Acute Podiatrists

• Diabetologists (Consultants, Registrar, and trainee staff)

• Microbiologists

• Community and Acute Podiatrists

• Diabetes Nurse Specialists

• Orthotists

• Vascular Surgeons

• Orthopaedic / Podiatric Surgeons

• Vascular Nurse Specialists

• General Practitioners

• Practice / Community Nurses

• Patients, relatives & representative groups

• Risk Management Team

• Research Development Facilitator

• Infection Control team.

Person specification

Education and Qualifications

Essential criteria

• HCPC Registered Podiatrist

• BSc Podiatry or equivalent qualification

• Masters level study, or equivalent experiential learning in management of the high risk foot

• Evidence of training in a specialist area (i.e. Diabetes, Rheumatology, Vascular)

Desirable criteria

• Postgraduate qualifications

• Prescription Only Medicines (POM-A, POM-S)

• Leadership or teaching qualification or training

Experience

Essential criteria

• NHS Podiatry experience managing complex patients with complex podiatric needs including impaired tissue viability

• Experience of treating complex patients in a speciality – i.e. Diabetes, Rheumatology, Vascular, Musculoskeletal - and formulating management plans

• Experience of undertaking research, audit, service improvement or leading projects

• Experience of providing clinical leadership

• Experience of supervising, mentoring, and training colleagues

• Experience of working in a multidisciplinary team

Desirable criteria

• Experience in undertaking Nail Surgery

• Experience of applying clinical governance and risk assessment to current and future clinical practice, including the development and approval of policies, procedures, and processes which ensure patient and staff safety

Skills and Knowledge

Essential criteria

• Excellent communication skills, written and verbal

• Ability to produce clear, accurate, and contemporaneous patient records and timely correspondence

• Able to provide high levels of podiatric care autonomously including appropriate sharp debridement, robust offloading, dressing plans, infection identification and management, and vascular, neurological, dermatological, musculoskeletal, and wound assessments

• Able to work effectively alone and as part of a team

• Broad in-depth podiatric knowledge on foot pathology and management and a specialist area - Diabetes, Rheumatology, Vascular, Musculoskeletal - and the ability to formulate complex management plans using a holistic patient-centred approach

• History of Continuing Professional Development

• Understand the podiatrist’s role within the NHS with an understanding of Primary Care

• Knowledge of relevant international and national guidance including i.e. NICE, IWGDF, National Wound Care Strategy Program

• Understands the implications of clinical research and evidence-based practice in relation to Podiatry and applies following appropriate governance

• Valid UK driving licence and access to vehicle with the ability to obtain business insurance

• Computer literate

• Knowledge of SystmOne or other patient record systems
