About the Role:

We are seeking an experience Learning manager for one of our esteemed clients. As Learning Manager you will be responsible for managing the Learning Team in order to deliver an exceptional experience for school and learning visitors and to provide engaging learning activities for all visitors to enhance the visitor experience as a key part of the seasonal programme. You will also be responsible for the development and expansion of the learning offer to grow school/education visit numbers year on year and the development of relationships with schools and learning partners to maximise collaborative opportunities and return visits.


Key Responsibilities

Team Management

  • Line Management and recruitment of Learning Officers and Learning Hosts.
  • Ensuring the most effective use of learning staff resources and the highest quality experiences for all learning visitors through effective use of rotas, teaching timetables and management of Learning Officers and Deliverers
  • Maintaining appropriate staff levels in line with booked school visitors and required delivery of learning activities and seasonal visitor experiences
  • Ensuring all new and existing team members receive appropriate training.
  • Ensuring that safeguarding standards are maintained and all staff are trained and checked appropriately
  • Managing Learning volunteers and work experience students within the department.
  • Conducting one-to-ones and performance review meetings.
  • Maintaining good morale and working to resolve any issues appropriately and in line with museum policies and procedures.
  • Be accountable for own development and that of staff. Seeking out effective opportunities to expand the knowledge and experience of the team.


Learning Programme

  • Delivering learning sessions and coordinating learning events.
  • Developing and growing the reach and scope of the Learning programme and increasing school and education group visit numbers year-on-year.
  • Consistently reviewing and improving practices and procedures to enhance the experience of school visitors and the efficiency of the team.
  • Ensuring that all learning activities are effectively resourced, monitoring stock levels of consumables and ensuring maintenance and replacement of equipment is done in good time to ensure a consistence standard of experience.
  • Monitoring and ensuring effective health and safety standards are maintained for all learning activities, equipment and spaces through producing and maintaining up-to-date risk assessments, regular safety checks and effective training. Working with the Facilities & IT team to ensure all equipment is working and reporting any problems.
  • Managing communications via the learning enquires email and phone line ensuring that all queries are answered promptly and professionally, whether communicating in person, via phone or via email.
  • Working closely with VX Manager, Box Office and Finance Team to develop and ensure a smooth enquires and bookings process
  • Work closely with Marketing and Box office to effectively utilise all resources, including CRM to track and manage relationships with schools and education groups to maximise revisit potential.
  • Working with Marketing Manager to develop the marketing materials and strategy for the learning programme and projects with a focus on growing numbers and developing long standing relationships with schools and youth organisations.
  • Working closely with the Fundraising Manager to develop bids for funding and manage grants and funded projects
  • Ensuring that all learning activities are effectively evaluated and feedback is gained from users. Manage and collate the evaluation of all learning activities and implement
  • Working to engage new audiences, especially harder to reach groups such as young people, NEETs, and those with disabilities and mental health issues


Family Learning

  • Managing the development and delivery of high quality family learning activities as part of the wider museum’s programme and ensuring these activities are effectively staffed and resourced throughout the period of delivery.


Other Responsibilities:

The post holder is expected to adopt a flexible approach to working hours, with some weekend and occasional evening work required.

  • Act as the Site Manager on occasion when required.
  • From time-to-time you may also be asked to perform other duties to ensure the smooth and efficient running of the organisation.


Knowledge, Experience and Skills

Essential:

  • Relevant degree or equivalent experience appropriate to the role
  • Substantial experience, with a proven track record of managing and delivering learning programmes and education events within the STEM / heritage sector
  • Line management experience in a learning/museum setting.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills including public presentation
  • Experience of working with and managing volunteers
  • Project management experience, ideally within a learning or community participation role.
  • Excellent team working, communication and organisational skills.
  • A sound knowledge in volunteering and community engagement principles and practice
  • Good customer service experience in a customer focused organisation
  • Ability to fulfil the travel requirements of the role.


Desirable:

  • A good understanding of the latest innovations in community participation including relevant external agendas
  • Excellent IT, social media, facilitation and presentation skills – able to deliver presentations to groups in a friendly but professional manner, as well as to plan and facilitate workshops and training
  • Innovation, creativity and problem solving – able to rise to a challenge by providing innovative and practical solutions
  • Knowledge of relevant legislative requirements relating to the role
