Help us create a net zero emission future Founded in 2020, Acua Ocean is a fast-growing and dynamic start-up at the forefront of the carbon net zero and maritime autonomy sectors. AO is at the convergence of cutting-edge technologies, e.g., zero emission propulsion, IoT, marine robotics and AI. We are hiring a Business Development Director to work within our growing Product Team leading on the sales and commercialisation of our unmanned surface vessel.


Reporting directly to the Chief Product Officer, a successful candidate must be a team player with a passion for selling, networking and sharing knowledge and be ready to be at the grassroots of this growing business supporting the development of a robust and diverse team delivering results that will revolutionise the way we protect and monitor our oceans.


Who you are:

  • You should have 5+ years experience as a senior Business Development Manager or Director, ideally with marine, defence or offshore services experience.
  • Able to work across teams of colleagues from diverse backgrounds, skills, knowledge, levels of experience and expertise. You build strong working relationships and communicate effectively with your colleagues across various functions.
  • Able to work autonomously (see what we did there) with a proactive mindset.
  • You balance commercial design considerations with a drive for quality, able to understand basic engineering and technical principles in order to evaluate the data to inform your decision making.
  • You are confident in your skills and know your area of expertise with an eye for innovation.


What you’ll do:

  • Identify new business opportunities and keep up to date of emerging markets and new business opportunities and upcoming programmes.
  • Work with the Chief Product Officer to set goals and develop plans for business revenue growth.
  • Generate leads through an extensive channel strategy, including networking, events, marketing and cold-calling prospective clients.
  • Lead the proposal development process including the preparation of bids and tenders, and the negotiation for new contracts.
  • Lead and support technical and commercial engagement events.
  • Keep abreast of market trends, competitor activities, and customer needs to identify competitive advantages and growth opportunities.
  • Manage the Company’s Customer Relationships and Management pipeline.
  • Develop and maintain long-term relationships with new and existing clients, partners, and industry stakeholders.
  • Regularly attend and present at industry, government and sector networking events.


What you’ll need:

  • Sales management experience within marine, offshore energy or defence manufacturing.
  • Extensive account management/ customer interface experience.
  • Ability to engage with R&D, Engineering and manufacturing teams and distill technical information to customers.
  • Willing to travel internationally (UK, EU, and US).
  • Excellent communication and inter-personal skills.
  • A flexible approach and a willingness to apply yourself across the whole spectrum of this growing business.
  • UK drivers licence.
  • Degree qualified, or equivalent experience.
  • A solid sense of humour, pragmatism, and flexibility.
